Newcastle United are continuing their preparations for the summer transfer window with plans to strengthen key areas of the squad, particularly in attack.
The club have been assessing options to improve their forward line following a season where consistency in front of goal has remained a concern.
Recent performances have highlighted the need for additional depth and competition in the striker position. Newcastle’s recruitment team have been monitoring several players across domestic and European competitions as they evaluate potential additions.
The search for a new striker comes amid broader planning across the squad, with multiple positions under review ahead of what is expected to be an active window.
Newcastle are understood to be exploring a range of profiles as part of that process, and according to Football Insider, their latest foe might now be on their radar.
“Newcastle want to sign a new striker, that’s become clear,” Mick Brown told Football Insider. “Who that’s going to be, there are a few options, and they could certainly do worse than signing Mateta after what he’s done at Crystal Palace.
“Another couple of goals at the weekend and one in Europe, he looks like he’s getting back to his best despite everything that happened in January.
“I’ve said it before, I think he’s perfect for Crystal Palace and they’re perfect for him, but at the end of the day he seems to be keen to move on. He’s proved he can score goals in the Premier League over a number of seasons now, and Newcastle have been keeping tabs on his situation.
“If he’s going to be available at the end of the season, he could well be somebody they go for. I don’t think he’s going to transform them into a top side, but he would be a better option than the ones they’ve got at their disposal now.”
Football Insider reported that Newcastle are among the clubs considering a move for the 28-year-old, who is widely expected to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season.
That said, no firm offer or even interest in the player has been registered for now, and given the recency of his performance against the Magpies, this could easily be just another case of recency-bias-fueled rumors.
