Newcastle need ‘massive performance’ against Arsenal to save European hopes
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe believes his side can get a positive result at Arsenal if they play to their “very best level”.
The Magpies are in serious danger of missing out on European football after a poor run of form. They have lost three games on the bounce to leave them 14th in the Premier League and seven points off the European places.
The Tyneside outfit also have one of the worst away records in the top flight, having won just four games on the road this season, while the Gunners have the second-best home record with just two defeats at the Emirates Stadium this term.
Howe is hopeful his Newcastle squad can lock in and produce the kind of performance that can lead to an upset.
“I think from our perspective, we’re just looking at ourselves. I think we’re looking at of course how we prepare and plan the game, but we’re looking at our intent and our attitude. Everything that people will be looking closely at us at the moment and rightly so.
“And we need to give the right answers and we need to give the right feeling in terms of how we’re conducting ourselves in these moments, which is where I think you’re truly judged.
“We need to show really good strength of character. We’re looking for a massive performance. I think if we can produce our very best level, and I think you’ve seen that throughout this season invariably we’ve won or we’ve taken teams very close. So we’re just focusing on our performance.”

European qualification appears unlikely, but Howe wants to see a perfect run-in from his side to end a disappointing campaign on the strongest possible note.
“Five wins out of five are needed for ourselves, they’re needed for the club, they’re needed for everybody,” he added.
So I don’t think we’re looking at it as for Europe. I think we’re looking at it that we need to win a game. First step is win a game and then try and win another one, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
