Newcastle United are preparing for a major roster facelift and, more importantly, a big shift in how they handle player sales this summer.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, the Magpies have plotted a clear plan to sell key players rather than resist interest until the last minute, with the main goal of avoiding late-window disruptions such as last year’s while accepting that selling players is simply necessary, especially with no European qualification in sight and a lack of huge revenues.
Several high-profile names are already drawing interest and creating early-summer buzz, including Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, , Anthony Gordon, , and —that’s half the XI right there.
Waugh indicates that at least one or two of Newcastle’s best-XI players are likely to be sold, with the funds reinvested into the squad.
According to the report, which features information from unnamed sources close to the club, Newcastle intend to act early this summer to avoid another situation.
Waugh reports that Newcastle want to identify which players they are willing to sell, communicate those decisions quickly to them, and complete deals before the window drags on while still keeping their high-money demands in place.
“They must identify who they will entertain offers for — it appears increasingly likely Gordon will leave — communicate those decisions with those individuals, get their exits sorted early and sign replacements, then ensure they stand strong and do not allow others who may also be in demand to go,” Waugh wrote. “Sources have told The Athletic that feelers are already being put out to potentially interested parties, and Newcastle must delicately balance holding out long enough to maximise the price they receive, while keeping uncertainty to a minimum by not allowing situations to drag on for weeks and then months.”
If we go by what Newcastle have already decided, the truth is that the club might actually have entered its ruthless phase, with player sales the next natural step to follow. Senior players such as , Fabian Schar and are all confirmed to be let go, so it makes sense to cut ties with high-value players in top-dollar sales to complete the full rebuild of the squad heading into next season.
After last year’s missteps, and at the very least, Newcastle are acting promisingly.
