As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for the 2026 NFL season, they're still waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether he's going to be their quarterback this fall.
On the one hand, he's easily their best option at this point. He elevates their floor and is considerably better than the Steelers' alternatives of Will Howard, Drew Allar and Mason Rudolph.
On the other hand, Rodgers isĀ 42 years old and turns 43 in December. He's not a long-term solution at quarterback and is no longer an elite player, limiting Pittsburgh's ceiling.

"What's best for the team is that Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback. What's best for the organization is that anybody but Rodgers is the quarterback," Orlovsky said.
While Rodgers gives Pittsburgh the best chance to win inĀ 2026, bringing him back would only delay the franchise's necessary rebuild for another year and limit the potential development of Allar and Howard.
Rodgers proved last year that he can still be a solid regular-season quarterback, leading the Steelers toĀ 10 wins and a division championship. However, he was completely overmatched in the postseason and no longer appears championship-caliber.
"I think with Aaron as their starting quarterback, they are a fringe playoff team," Orlovsky continued. "I think they're a nine-win team with Aaron."
Pittsburgh hasn't had a losing season since 2003, but has been a victim of its own regular-season success in some ways. Orlovsky pointed out that the Steelers have only had two topĀ 10 draft picks since 1990, making it incredibly difficult for them to draft and develop a talented quarterback.
If Rodgers comes back, that trend will likely only continue this year.
