The Atlanta Falcons have one of the weakest quarterback rooms in the NFL, ranked fifth worst by CBS Sports. Despite signing Tua Tagovailoa, the team's offseason moves have drawn criticism for lacking impact players.
The Atlanta Falcons have been pretty conservative so far this offseason, earning derision from more than one anonymous NFL executive who just doesn't know what they're doing. Atlanta didn't sign any true impact players in free agency and their draft class is usually ranked on the lower end compared to the rest of the league.
One exception to the rule was their signing Tua Tagovailoa to add to their new-look quarterback room. At less than $1 million for one year its impossible for the move to age poorly. However, even with Tua boosting the backups this unit is considered one of the NFL's weakest.
According to Garrett Podell at CBS Sports, the Falcons have the fifth-worst QB room in the league.
"Both Tagovailoa and Penix Jr. are injury risks, but Tagovailoa is the least injured of the two at the moment. Penix Jr. will likely return to the starting quarterback when healthy, but it would make sense for them to be cautious with his rehab."
The comically-dysfunctional Cleveland Browns and New York Jets ranked at the very bottom of the list, followed by the Aaron Rodgers-less Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kyler Murray-less Arizona Cardinals. That's it as far as teams in a worse situation according to this particular ranking.
Nobody in their right mind would claim this is an above-average QB unit, but ranking them this low feels a little bit harsh. Michael Penix's knees are an obvious concern but he played at an extremely high level in his last two years at Washington - with enough consecutive starts he could in theory build his game up much higher than what we have seen thus far in the pros.
Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa's concussion history is another major yellow flag, but he has also demonstrated a very high ceiling in the past. In 2022 Tua posted the best passer rating in the league, then the following season he led the NFL in passing yards and in 2024 he had its best completion rate.
Tua's game was admittedly shaky last season. However, he probably has a higher ceiling than any other backup QB in the league right now. That alone should keep the Falcons out of the 10-worst QB room conversation.
That said, the Miami Dolphins paid $99 million this year for him to play for another team. It is more than fair to question just how far this quarterback tandem will get the Falcons.
