Niners Make Excellent Pick in Todd McShay's Mock Draft
Mock draft season is reaching final draft season as NFL analysts make their last prediction for how the NFL draft will unfold. One popular draft analyst is making his picks for the 2026 NFL draft.
Todd McShay released his latest mock draft. He sees the San Francisco 49ers drafting one of the top offensive lineman in the 2026 class in Utah tackle Caleb Lomu. McShay dropped his thoughts on the potential pick up for the Niners.
"This is a forward-thinking move for San Francisco. The 49ers would draft Lomu with the plan to develop him into the starting left tackle by 2027, as Trent Williams is set to turn 38 in a few months.
Lomu shows impressive natural instincts for the position, though he’s still relatively inexperienced, with just 24 starts (all at left tackle) over the past two seasons. He’s a bit high-cut and could stand to add more bulk, but he’s a high-level athlete with the quickness, balance, and mirroring ability you look for at the position.
I don’t see him kicking inside to guard in 2026, but that’s up to Kyle Shanahan and his staff. Either way, this is good business. Draft, develop, and have your next left tackle ready to go on a rookie deal for four years."

Caleb Lomu is projected to play as an offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers.
The pick is seen as strategic because it prepares the team for the future, as current left tackle Trent Williams is nearing retirement.

Lomu stands as what could be the heir apparent to follow Niners star offensive tackle Trent Williams. His addition would almost certainly be a welcome one as the 49ers look to protect starting quarterback Brock Purdy for the foreseeable future.
Presumably, Lomu would be a Houston Texan should he make it past the San Francisco 49ers at No. 27. That is, if we assume that Houston values Lomu to that degree. Both Houston and San Francisco need an offensive tackle, but the Niners are in prime position to find their selection first.
San Francisco could certainly look elsewhere to find a top player. Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood, Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren and Clemson edge rusher T.J. Parker all fell below the Niners in this mock draft. Conceivably, the team could draft any of those three players and feel good about it. That said, the 49ers are likely to address their most pressing need in adding Lomu according to Todd McShay.
There is no consensus on where teams will go with their picks, but McShay is dialed into the NFL draft process. We'll see if McShay gets the Niners' selection right when they draft on April 23.
