Dolan Comforti, a 6-foot-7 junior setter for the Nipmuc-BVT boys volleyball team, has seen significant growth, impacting his game. His height allows him to deliver powerful spikes, making him a standout player.
UPTON - The growth spurt hurt.
Dolan Comforti grew five inches during his freshman year. And another six since.
He now stands 6-foot-7. He is known as a setter, but when he spikes a volleyball, it usually goes straight to the floor. Kill.
“I was never estimated to be this tall,” said the Blackstone Valley Tech junior who plays for the Nipmuc-BVT co-op. “It took me by surprise; it took my parents by surprise. Shoe shopping’s never been easy because you can’t go into stores anymore.”
He wears a size 15, by the way.
On Thursday, in a 3-1 win over Southeastern Voc Tech at BVT, he also wore tape on his injured left wrist and a compression sleeve on his left knee. Comforti is used to the discomfort: his jump in height caused back pain.

“My body wasn’t ready for that,” he said. “It was a lot, but I would never take my height for granted. I know that I’m blessed with my natural height.”
Comforti is the first NVT player to reach 1,000 career assists, though Cody Porter was on his way before covid took away his senior year.
NVT coach Brian Gerard calls Comforti “the complete package.”
“When he came in as a freshman, I’m like ‘hel-lo,’” Gerard said. “He’s gotten bigger every single year. He’s country strong. He can set from everywhere on the court.”
NVT is comprised mostly of players from Blackstone Valley Tech, but plays a majority of its home matches at Nipmuc, a short walk down Pleasant Street. The team played four matches at BVT last season, winning them all, but Thursday was the only one this season.
NVT won the first set 25-21 but fell behind 24-17 in the second set before scoring the next seven points to pull even. At 25-all, Comforti’s kill put his team ahead before a service winner by Evan Donlon handed the hosts a 27-25 victory.

“That’s one of those character-building moments,” Gerard said of the late rally.
“We have a lot of great players; we all know what we’re capable of,” Comforti said. “At the end of the day, you only lose when you get to 25. We knew we could come back. We were able to pull each other up. We could’ve gotten negative, but we didn’t. We celebrate every point and that got us the win.”
After dropping the third set, the serving of Myles Guikema and the net play of Ethan Dahmer lifted NVT to a 15-5 lead in the fourth before the team closed out a 25-15 victory to improve to 16-2.
“The potential for this group – the sky’s the limit,” Gerard said of the up-and-down performance. “We’re our own worst enemy and we can be our best friend. When things aren’t working out, you need to simplify everything.”
Comforti wanted to attend BVT because the high school in his hometown – Uxbridge – doesn't have a volleyball program. He is studying information technology with a focus on cyber security.
He started playing volleyball in eighth grade for a local club team – the Dragons – and has played with SMASH volleyball the past two years. His goal is to play in college at the highest level.
“I’d love to do D1,” he said. “I just have to edit more film. I’m quite busy right now so I haven’t had the chance to sit down and edit a lot of the film that I want.”
Even while not at 100%, the highlights are many. He hurt his wrist two weeks ago diving for a ball and said his knee “felt off” before the Southeastern match, leading to the compression wrap.

“Nothing I can do about it,” he said of the injuries. “I just have to keep pushing and try to give my all no matter what happens. I know that if I give a good performance, (his teammates) can give a good performance. If I have a bad they, they bring me up.”
After saying hellotwo seasons ago, Gerard dreads the day when he has to bid farewell to his talented – and tall – outside hitter.
“He’s the full package,” Gerard said. “Once he goes, replacing his talent will be a mission and a half.”
