Fernandes: I could have left Man Utd but being successful here means more
Bruno Fernandes explains why he chose to stay at Manchester United.

David Estrada, 38, hasn't played a professional match in six seasons but continues to showcase his skills as New Mexico United's assistant and head of the developmental academy. He participates in practice to support the team and maintain his competitive edge.
Sure, David Estrada hasnāt played a professional match in six seasons. And yes, he is 38 years old.
No matter.
The New Mexico United assistant and head man for the clubās developmental academy program still finds a way to get his competitive fix in ā thanks to a neon-colored pinnie jersey worn during practice by the reserves.
āWhen first-team players go down or thereās individuals who might have a question of uncertainty in the morning, (manager) Dennis (Sanchez) will just tell me to jump on,ā said Estrada, who played professionally for 11 seasons, including five with the Seattle Sounders and another with D.C. United in MLS and two with United in 2019-20.
All to help the club, the players and maybe, just maybe, even to collect some bragging rights for the day. And then? It becomes serious business.

Estrada: Itās funny because I think that even though I had a long career, a lot of people like to think about the stadiums full of people, but I really did enjoy what some people call the grind. I really did enjoy the competition of it all, and being around a really good group thatās really competitive as well. I think at this level, players donāt make it this high unless youāre ultra competitive. And when you surround yourself with those types of individuals, the only thing you can do is get better.
Kris Shakes, goalkeeper: I tell him every day, and Iām not even lying, class is permanent. Heās still got the passion and heās still got the skills. It is a little surprising. People would think that heās not up to date or he would be the weakest link, but heās really trying to drive the session in all seriousness, and you can see the passion.
Marlon Vargas, midfielder: When I first got here (in 2024), it was pretty funny. But he can still do it. I think what helps him out is that heās fit. Heās always been like that, even when I was teammates with him (with the Tacoma Defiance). Now, he can do it in practice. He canāt play in a match (laughs).
Shakes: I heard he was a dog. A little chihuahua, but a dog. (Estrada is listed at 5-foot-8.)
Kyle Hofmann, academy player, defender: I mean, to be honest, itās a bit depressing. Nah, just kidding (laughs). It is inspiring and also cool to see. If you know Dave, itās not that shocking. Coaching the academy, heās a competitive coach and seeing him hop in the field and just switch it on like that is cool to see. You can definitely feed off that energy and that hunger.

Vargas: If he scores or makes a play, heāll let an opponent know ā in a cheeky way.
Estrada: Iām definitely a trash talker, but a humble trash talker. Iāll never say anything that crosses a line, but I will celebrate. It might seem like Iām rubbing it in, but thatās just the joy of winning and scoring a goal. Itās never to poke fun at someone.
Hofmann: Trash talk is pretty common (for everyone), especially in intense sessions. No matter who it is, thereās some back and forth. All in good fun, though. You just have to give him a, āCāmon old man.ā And then heāll probably go for my pace or say something about a weak foot. āForce him here and weāll press him.ā A little less direct, but the point gets across for sure.
Vargas: I will say, physically, I think he still handles the ball very well. He lacks just a little because of the speed of play. Sometimes he gets fatigued, but hey, heās not playing any more.
Estrada: There are points where I question myself like, āAre they a man down with me being on their team?ā So thatās why I feel like I have to work twice as hard. But I think thereās a mutual respect between the coaching staff and the players.
Vargas: Heās smart enough not to get into those 50-50 tackles. Heās smart enough not to put himself in those situations, especially against a Will (Seymore), Luther (ArchimĆØde), Maliek (Howell), some of the bigger guys. Heās pretty smart on knowing when to take a challenge and when not to take a challenge.
Shakes: Iām going to say no, he hasnāt gotten the better of me. Weāve had some chances at 1-v-1 against each other, but I feel like I always get the best from him.
Hofmann: He rarely hops on the field at Academy. He saves it for (the) first team. He knows his level. Heāll set an example at Academy, though.
Vargas: Oh, man, he was a good leader. He took me and a lot of my old teammates who are still playing under his wing and just guided us very well as a good pro should. He still has that in him. He still gives me some good advice and to the younger guys, too. I think he does a good job with the academy in terms of guiding them.
Estrada: They make me better in terms of just questioning my ideas as a coach and then when I step on the field also question, āWas I really that good?ā You know, itās a humbling experience, but itās something that I think not a lot of coaches get to do.
