The No. 13 Virginia baseball team (25-11, 9-8 ACC) fell to Notre Dame (16-13, 7-10 ACC) 5-3 on Saturday at Frank Eck Stadium, as the Irish built an early lead and held off a late Cavaliers rally to even the weekend series.
Notre Dame scored the first five runs of the game against Virginia starter Max Stammel and maintained control until the Cavaliers mounted a push in the later innings.
After two scoreless frames, the Irish broke through in the third inning with an RBI single followed by a two-out, two-run hit to left field. Notre Dame added to its advantage in the fourth when Mark Quatrani delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Virginia’s bullpen trio of Matt Augustin, Noah Yoder and Henry Zatkowski kept the game within reach, limiting Notre Dame to just two hits over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Sam Harris led the Cavaliers offensively, driving in all three runs on a game-high three hits. Harrison Didawick sparked the rally in the seventh with a leadoff single before Harris connected on the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run to center field — his team-leading 11th of the season — to cut the deficit to 5-2.
In the eighth, Eric Becker reached with a single through the left side and later scored on Harris’ double off the wall in left-center field, trimming the margin to 5-3. However, Notre Dame reliever William Jaisle ended the threat by stranding three runners with a flyout and a strikeout.
Jaisle closed the game in the ninth, retiring all three Virginia batters he faced to secure the win and even the series.
The final score was Notre Dame 5, Virginia 3.
Notre Dame scored five runs through an RBI single and a two-run hit in the third inning, followed by a two-run single in the fourth inning.
After the loss, Virginia's record stands at 25-11 overall and 9-8 in the ACC.
