Noahkai Banks Could Be A USMNT Defensive Star, If He Commits

The United States will head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup desperate to demonstrate that they can compete with the best international teams on the planet.

The US men’s team have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals at the tournament and reaching that stage will be their minimum aim this summer.

Their hopes of progression would potentially be boosted if FC Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks decided to commit his international future to the US.

Banks faces a monumental decision

The US-born defender moved with his family to Germany when he was seven weeks old, so can declare allegiance to either country at international level.

He has already represented the US in several youth squads, but has yet to decide on his senior pathway. Many pundits believe Germany will come calling.

With the start of the World Cup just a few weeks away, Banks has an important choice to make – one which he admits will not be easy.

“It’s a difficult decision regarding my nationality – I’m very torn,” he said in a recent interview. “Hopefully, I’ll have a long career ahead of me, so I want to think carefully and speak with my family.

“I don’t want to make it dependent on a World Cup. I’m just happy to be in this position and to be able to make this decision. We’ll see what happens.”

The dual-nationality issue is a minefield

Dual nationality is a tricky subject. Numerous previous examples have triggered widespread debate, and Banks’ situation is the latest to cause controversy.

Some people believe that his reluctance to immediately commit to the country of his birth should persuade manager Mauricio Pochettino not to pick him.

Other individuals adopt a different stance, arguing that FIFA could remove uncertainty from the equation by insisting that players should play for the country where they are born.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, Antonee Robinson, Giovanni Reyna, Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter are among the players who could not represent the US if the system were implemented.

Barring seven weeks of his life, Banks has been fully immersed in German culture. However, he was born in Hawaii, so many people believe he is American.

The US included five German-Americans in their 2014 squad, plus two other players with dual European citizenship.

Their inclusion resulted in former US star Landon Donovan, ironically, another dual-national, being omitted from the team that reached the round of 16 of the World Cup in Brazil.

Donovan was born in the US but had a Canadian father. However, he had no doubt in his mind about which country he should represent when the opportunity arose.

It’s ultimatum time for Banks

Banks is currently in a fortunate position. He could commit to the US, or wait to see whether four-time world champions Germany offer him an opportunity.

The presence of a marketable rising star in the squad would undoubtedly garner attention from 2026 World Cup sponsors looking to capitalise commercially.

Public interest in the US team’s performances on home soil will be off the scale and Banks has the type of profile which marketing teams love.

However, his refusal to jump at the chance to play for the US speaks volumes and Pochettino needs to issue him with an ultimatum.

Banks could be the cornerstone of the US’ defensive unit for the next decade and beyond, but waiting to see what happens with Germany should not be an option.
