The North Carolina Tar Heels have finally made their first splash in the transfer portal. Last week, UNC secured a commitment from Neoklis Avdalas. The former Virginia Tech star is coming off a productive freshman campaign and will look to build on his success with a new program.
During the 2025-2026 campaign, Avdalas averaged 12.1 points and 4.6 assists per game. While averaging 31.7 minutes a night, the Greek native shot 31.4 percent from three-point range. Due to his ability to score from anywhere on the court, Avdalas became a staple in the Hokies lineup.
While Virginia Tech did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament, Avdals thrived against advanced competition. In ACC play, he shot 35.7 percent from the field. With the Tar Heels, he should get the opportunity to be one of the team's main combo guards.
For North Carolina, the last few weeks have been full of change. They welcomed in a new head coach, Michael Malone, earlier this month, who is already reshaping the roster. He was an NBA champion in 2023 and could be a very gapped mentor for Avdalas.
In Avdalas, UNC is getting a player who flashed star potential as a freshman. That included a three-game stretch in which he averaged 17 points, four rebounds and five assists. During that run, the newest Tar Heel shot 52.4 from three point range. If Malone can get Avdalas to be more consistent the North Carolina offense will be hard to stop.

Since the portal opened, UNC has taken some hits, with seven players deciding to look for new opportunities. However, they received good recruiting news when top-25 recruit Maximo Adams decided to keep his commitment. Junior Jaydin Young also opted to return to Chapel Hill and play for Malone after entering the portal.
Although there is still more work to be done, Malone has already shown he can bring in impact talent with the addition of Avdalas, who has a bright future.
