Northampton in talks with investment group

Northampton Town are in talks with a "well-funded investment group" over a potential deal they hope will clear the club's debts.

The news comes just three days after Northampton's relegation to League Two was confirmed by a 2-1 defeat at Luton Town.

The scale of the investment is not yet known and the identities of those involved in the group have not been disclosed at this stage.

However, Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "We are excited as we feel we have found the right group of people to support the club going forward, who are very football-focused, and [we] are excited about the potential.

"If this process is ultimately successful, we expect the club will be debt-free, which is a goal we have always hoped for."

Earlier this month, Northampton announced a £2.995m pre-tax loss for the 12 months to the end of June 2025, set a against a club record turnover of £7.541m.

Members of the group have visited the club's Sixfields home and training ground, and they have signed a letter of intent.

"A period of exclusivity has commenced to allow for formal due diligence, the development of legal paperwork and the relevant approvals," said a club statement.

Thomas said playing in League Two next season would have no bearing on the outcome of talks.

"We fully understand and accept that results have been extremely disappointing in 2026 but this agreement was never dependent on divisional status and is a very important step to give the club the best chance to be more competitive in football's current financial climate," he added.
