Northwestern (15-3, 6-3 B1G) was crowned as the No. 1 seed for the 2026 Division I Womenâs Lacrosse Bracket last Sunday night.
The Wildcats climbed all the way back to the top of the nationâs rankings, after suffering three early season losses that bounced them outside of the top 10 for the first time in nearly eight full years. However, after spending the last two months fighting to climb the polls, Northwestern has a new road ahead of it, with four games standing in the way of the programâs ninth national title. As the No. 1 seed and host of this yearâs NCAA womenâs lacrosse Final Four, the âCats will play every game from here on out at home â but who will they play along the way?
After enjoying its first-round bye, Northwestern will enter the draw circle against the winner of the Notre Dame-James Madison first-round matchup.
Notre Dame plays a physical ACC style built around strong dodging from the wings, aggressive transition offense and the heavy use of two-player actions behind the cage. As will be the case against most of the nationally-ranked opponents the âCats face in the tournament, Notre Dame is physical, with its roster construction under Christine Halfpenny prioritizing athletic versatility over pure finesse. The Fighting Irish had a 12-5 regular season record and rank 17th nationally in scoring offense, scoring 14.29 goals per game.
Meanwhile, JMU is the mid-major nobody wants to see. The Dukes sport a 13-6 record, rank top 25 nationally in assists per game (7.37), points per game (20.21) and goals scored (244). JMUâs offense is characterized by patient possessions and calculated scoring, making the Dukes more methodical than a typical mid-major opponent. Having reached the 2018 Final Four, James Madison is no easy out.
Northwestern lacrosse currently has a record of 15-3 for the 2026 season.

Whether the âCats see the Fighting Irish or the Dukes on Saturday at Martin Stadium, Northwestern is bound to see immediate competition out of the gate. However, the âCatsâ strong defensive identity, anchored by its ace goalie Jenika Cuocco, should propel Northwestern to a regional championship game, where it would likely face either the No. 10-seeded Florida Gators or No. 8-seeded Colorado Buffaloes.
Both teams hail from the Big 12, where they met in the Big 12 Tournament championship game. Colorado won its first-ever Big 12 Tournament Championship with its 8-6 win over the Gators, who were the top seed in the bracket.
However, despite common conference roots, these teams look very different on the turf. The Gators are ELITE offensively, ranking seventh in the nation in goals (282) and eighth in the nation in shots on goal per game (24.00). Additionally, Florida is battled-tested, having played top 10 teams like Michigan and Navy, losing by three or fewer goals in each of those games.
On the other side, Colorado is a defensive-minded tournament team that ranks first in scoring defense (6.35 goals allowed per game). The Buffaloes limit possessions and force lower shooting percentages and were able to suffocate the âCats with this exact identity early this season. Unranked early in the season, Colorado stunned Northwestern at Ryan Fieldhouse, winning 10-9 amid Maddie Shoupâs career performance. The senior scored five goals and the Buffaloes got the job done.
For Northwestern, the scariest part of its region is the potential that it might have to play Florida coach Ann Elliott Whiddenâs squad once again. Sure, Florida can run up the score, but the âCats know that when their offense is at its best, they can outscore anyone in the nation. More frightening are the Buffaloes, who have shown they are one of the few teams able to slow down Northwesternâs attack.
If the âCats were able to advance past Colorado, theyâd punch their ticket to a seventh-straight Final Four. In this scenario, theyâd likely face either No. 4-seeded Johns Hopkins or No. 5-seeded Stony Brook.
Johns Hopkins has evolved into one of the most balanced teams in the country, pairing disciplined Big Ten defense with an efficient half-field offense that emphasizes spacing, possession control and high-percentage finishing. Hopkins finished the regular season 14-4 and earned a No. 4 NCAA Tournament seed, ranking among the national leaders in both scoring margin and defensive efficiency. Lacey Downey established herself as one of the nationâs premier offensive players, ranking 13th among the NCAA leaders in points per game.
Stony Brook remains one of the nationâs most physical and disruptive programs, built around elite draw control, relentless riding pressure and aggressive team defense. The Seawolves thrive on chaos, ranking fifth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (12.89). Stony Brook finished the regular season 17-2 and entered the NCAA Tournament riding a 13-game winning streak, one of the longest in the country.
However, the âCats were able to take down both the Blue Jays and the Seawolves in the regular season. Northwestern took down Johns Hopkins 16-12 at home, but had more trouble on the road against Stony Brook, winning 13-12 off the back of a five-point performance from Aditi Foster. Similar to the regional championship, the âCats probably like their matchup against Johns Hopkins better, with confidence that their offense will be able to beat whatever the Blue Jaysâ No. 14-ranked scoring offense produces. However, Stony Brookâs defensive identity gave the âCats trouble back in February and could pose a problem again if they were to match up again with a national championship berth on the line
Finally, if Northwestern were to make it all the way to the title game, it would likely have to get past one of three teams to secure its ninth national championship.
No. 2-seeded North Carolina enters the tournament as arguably the most complete team in the country, combining elite athleticism with devastating transition offense and suffocating riding pressure. North Carolina finished the regular season 16-1, won the ACC championship and earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament after spending much of the season ranked near the top of the national polls. However, UNCâs one loss came against Northwestern back in non-conference play, as the âCats took down the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill in overtime, 17-16.
No. 3-seeded Maryland is one of the most decorated programs in womenâs lacrosse history and continues to embody one of the most disciplined and efficient systems, built around elite ball movement, draw control dominance and outstanding defensive recovery speed. The key to the Terrapins this season is goalie JJ Suriano, who might be the best in the nation, ranking sixth in saves per game. However, Northwestern did beat Maryland twice this season â 11-10 in the regular season at Maryland on April 9 and 8-7 in overtime in the 2026 Big Ten championship game on Annabel Childâs game-winner.
Syracuse finished the regular season 13-5 and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the IWLCA poll earlier this season. Despite a storied reputation for being one of the nationâs most explosive offensive programs, the Orange have been anchored in their defense this year, with the 12th-ranked scoring defense in the country. This defense was on display earlier this season when Syracuse upset Northwestern at Ryan Fieldhouse, holding the âCats to just six goals, their lowest total since 2022.
Once again, despite North Carolina being the favorite to win the national championship all year long, I think the tougher matchups for Northwestern are Maryland and Syracuse, who have defensive-minded identities. And, with the way this season has gone for the âCats, I think itâs only right that they would have to beat one of these two teams in a dogfight in order to claim the national title.
To start its journey to the title game, Northwestern faces the winner of the Notre Dame-James Madison game on Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m. CT at Martin Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
