Notre Dame asks a lot of its safeties, but Gamble has all the tools to handle all of those responsibilities. A big reason we know that is he's asked to do a lot of those things for his high school team. He plays both field and boundary safety for St. Thomas Aquinas, and he's asked to play middle of the field, he's asked to play in the alleys, he's asked to show range to the field and he'll come down into the boundary and do things we see Adon Shuler thrive with in the Notre Dame defense. Gamble is a high quality athlete, but he's also an exceptionally smart and instinctive player, something Notre Dame continues to covet at the safety position.
Gamble has a solid all-around frame, with a body type that is similar to Shuler and former Irish standouts Xavier Watts and Alohi Gilman. He has an athletic frame that should continue to fill out, but there's certainly a need for him to add more weight room strength. Gamble is a tough player and more than willing to mix it up in the run game, but the extra strength will make him more effective as a run defender and also more impactful as a hitter. Gamble is a quality tackler that goes low and wraps up well. He shows good disengagement skills, but he'll need more strength for this to remain a strength at the college level.
Much of the focus when talking about Gamble's physical tools is his speed, which at this point is solid but unspectacular. Gamble won't be winning any races against top safeties, but that was also true for Watts and Gilman, and is currently true for Shuler. What speed he does have he maximizes thanks to his all-around athletic talent and the football IQ I'll discuss below. Gamble is a fluid athlete with quick and nimble feet, traits that allow him to change direction extremely well. Whether he's opening up off the hash or redirecting downhill, Gamble's change of direction movements are outstanding. As he adds more strength, I anticipate Gamble adding a bit more juice from a speed standpoint, which will only enhance his game.
What separates Gamble from other safeties, and what makes him one of my favorite safeties in the 2027 class, is that he combines truly elite football skills with his smooth athletic skill. Gamble is an extremely smart and instinctive football player. He's always around the ball and for such a young safety, Gamble shows impressive awareness and feel for the game. He makes great reads, shows a great understanding of proper angles when driving on routes and his route anticipation is top notch. Gamble shows these traits playing deep safety, working the alleys and also in man coverage situations in the slot.
Gamble is also a fundamentally sound football player. I've already discussed his sound technique in the run game, but he's even better in coverage. His pedal is clean and efficient. He keeps his base, he's short and smooth with his pedal and he stays in great position to either quickly open and run, or to plant and drive downhill. There's very little wasted movement in his game. When you combine his clean movement skills with his intelligence on the field you understand why Gamble is so effective and why he's always around the football.
