Notre Dame football is targeting quarterback Wonderful 'Champ' Monds IV from Vero Beach High School in the 2027 recruiting class, as other top prospects have committed elsewhere. Monds is scheduled to visit South Bend on April 18, and while Notre Dame is not the current favorite, they remain a contender in his recruitment.
Notre Dame football is pursuing an extremely talented quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class. They are trying to pull an upset down the stretch.
In the blink of an eye, the Notre Dame 2027 quarterback board dried up. With Davin Davidson now committed to the Florida Gators and Kamden Lopati trending to the Michigan Wolverines, Vero Beach (Fla.) High School signal caller Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV is the lone man left. That’s where the attention is, for now.
With Monds set to visit South Bend this offseason, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are set to make a strong push. As of today, Notre Dame is not considered to be the favorite for the talented signal caller. According to Steve Wiltfong from Rivals/On3, he is not counting out the Irish yet.
“Notre Dame is a dark horse for Champ Monds, as well,” Wiltfong said. “They are in the mix for Kamden Lopati, the Illinois commit, is trending towards Michigan. Monds is scheduled to visit Notre Dame the weekend of April 18th. He was the first guy that Notre Dame offered at the position after 2027 commit Teddy Jarrard reclassified to 2026. Notre Dame embodies a lot of that things that Champ Monds and his family are looking for in a school. So we will see if Notre Dame can make a run with their visit but right now, you have Florida State and Ohio State battling for the Vero Beach High standout with Notre Dame remaining in the picture.”
Whether Notre Dame can make a real push remains to be seen. As we have seen, counting out Freeman and Co. on the recruiting trail is never a smart decision. Only time will tell what the future holds for Monds. He would be a tremendous addition to a quarterback room that needs to be prepared for when CJ Carr heads off to the NFL.
Monds was previously a member of the 2028 recruiting class (where he was ranked as the top quarterback in the class) before reclassifying to 2027 recently.
Despite that jump, Monds is still rated as a four-star player on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. That rating has the Florida native pegged as the No. 210 overall player, the No.19 quarterback, and the No. 23 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. As Monds showcases himself this offseason, he feels like a safe bet to continue moving up those rankings.
A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing Monds. The 6-2, 225-pound signal caller currently holds offers from the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Michigan, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, South Carolina, SMU, UNC, Illinois, UCF, Baylor, Wake Forest, and West Virginia, among others.
In five games in 2025, Monds flashed as the main backup to 2026 Florida State athlete signee Efrem White. He managed to complete 45 of 63 passes (71 percent) for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. Monds also scored a touchdown on the ground, while also not throwing an interception.
With a very talented Vero Beach team returning next season, you should expect the dynamic signal caller to put together a tremendous year.
Wonderful 'Champ' Monds IV is a highly regarded quarterback from Vero Beach High School, and he is crucial for Notre Dame as they seek to strengthen their quarterback roster for the future.
Monds' visit on April 18 is significant as it provides Notre Dame an opportunity to showcase their program and potentially sway his decision in their favor amidst competition from other schools.
Florida State and Ohio State are currently the main competitors for Champ Monds' commitment, with Notre Dame also in the mix despite not being the favorite.
To improve their chances of landing Monds, Notre Dame needs to effectively communicate how their program aligns with his family's values and demonstrate their commitment during his upcoming visit.
