As the Mets take on the Yankees in the teams' series opener at 7:10 p.m. on Friday at Citi Field, the Mets are coming off their first three-game sweep over the Tigers. They have won three out of their last four series and eight of their last 12 games.
The Mets have received a boost from rookie outfielders A.J. Ewing, who reached base four times including an RBI triple in his debut on Tuesday and knocked his first home run on Thursday, and Carson Benge, who has an .888 OPS in May.
The Mets pushed across 22 runs against the Tigers while receiving quality starts from Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean along the way.
The task for the Mets offense will be about as difficult as it has been this season as they go up against Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler, who owns the American League's best ERA (1.35) through nine starts.
Schlittler, who is 5-1, has not allowed more than one earned run in any of his last five starts.
The Mets will have one of their top pitchers on the mound, as well, in Clay Holmes. The veteran right-hander is 4-3 with a 1.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in eight starts. He finished one out away from his fourth straight quality start last time around, allowing two earned runs in 5⅔ innings with six strikeouts in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
The game is scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m. today.
