NEW YORK — The bad news piled onto the Mets on Wednesday afternoon.
Following Tuesday's news that Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco were still dealing with nagging symptoms associated with their injuries, the Mets were hit with another setback during Tuesday night's 10-2 win.
Francisco Alvarez was removed from the game in the sixth inning on an awkward swing, and an MRI revealed that the Mets starting catcher tore the meniscus in his right knee. Alvarez will undergo surgery, with the hope that his absence will be six to eight weeks. A true timeline will become clearer following the procedure.
"A lot of teams are going through adversity. A lot of teams are going through dealing with injuries. We're one of them, but we got to keep going," Carlos Mendoza said. "Guys are going to have to step up. They will. And we're looking for ways to get the job done."
Alvarez's absence comes at the beginning of a positive development for the Mets roster. A.J. Ewing made an immediate impact in his major league debut on Tuesday, reaching base four times in five plate appearances, with three walks, a triple, two runs and two RBI.
The Mets will look to secure a series win over the Tigers in the second game of the series at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
The Mets' Christian Scott will be making his fourth start of the season on Wednesday night. He comes in with an 0-0 record with a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4⅔ innings in his last outing against the Rockies.
On the other side, Tigers left-hander Framber Valdez will be returning to the mound after a five-game suspension for intentionally hitting the 's in his last start. Valdez is 2-2 and his ERA ballooned to 4.57 after allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and one walk in three innings in a loss to the Red Sox.
Francisco Alvarez tore the meniscus in his right knee during the game.
Alvarez is expected to be out for six to eight weeks following his surgery.
The Mets won the game against the Tigers with a score of 10-2.
