Upon finally returning to full fitness, however, the former Atlético Madrid youth player left on loan to 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg in search of regular playing time. Nürnberg head coach Miroslav Klose has been very hesitant to use the team’s #20, however, keeping Fernández on the bench for over 2 months before finally giving him his debut in the starting XI in a 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld. Klose spoke of his relief that Fernández could back up his training performances with performances on the pitch and has subsequently started the 19-year-old in the next two matches. Overjoyed at this recent development and opening up in a fairly recent interview, Fernández discussed what it was like finally getting a chance: “I’ve often thought about how it will feel to make such a starting lineup debut for the club,” he said, as captured by . “Since I came to Nuremberg, this has been my big goal.
