Oilers’ Calvin Pickard recall signals smart playoff insurance move

The Edmonton Oilers made a calculated move ahead of the NHL playoffs by recalling goaltender Calvin Pickard on an emergency basis. The announcement initially raised questions, but the reasoning became clear as a strategic decision rather than a reaction to injuries.

According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, there are no fitness concerns surrounding Connor Ingram or Tristan Jarry. Instead, league requirements played a key role.

“Can confirm that there are no injuries to either Ingram or Jarry,” Spector wrote on X. “NHL wants teams to have an “NHL GOALIE” as their No. 3 in playoff. Pickard will be that for Oilers.”

This rule ensures the Oilers have reliable depth if injuries or fatigue arise during a demanding playoff schedule.

Pickard began the season in Edmonton’s rotation before being assigned to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors in February. His experience still holds value, especially in high-pressure situations. With Stuart Skinner traded earlier in the season, the Oilers reshaped their crease, bringing in Jarry while giving Ingram a larger role as a starter.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch recently praised Ingram’s mindset after a 2-1 shootout loss to Colorado Avalanche.

“I think he’s enjoying it,” Knoblauch said about their starting goalie. “I think the guys have made him feel very welcome. I know they appreciate his performances on the ice, and I think he’s feeling a lot of support from the fans. So, I believe he’s having a lot of fun, and when you’re having fun and you feel confident, that goes a long way with your game.
