The fallout from the Edmonton Oilersâ collapse has shifted squarely onto General Manager Stan Bowman after the firing of head coach Kris Knoblauch. The decision has failed to quell criticism surrounding the clubâs disastrous 2025-26 NHL season.
Edmonton entered the year as a Stanley Cup favorite after back-to-back Final appearances in 2024 and 2025. Instead, the Oilers stumbled to a 41-30-11 record before a first-round playoff elimination against the Anaheim Ducks.
Days later, reports emerged that the Oilers were trying to have discussions with the currently fired Vegas Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy. Following that, Bowman dismissed Knoblauch despite the coach posting a .624 points percentage across 233 regular-season games and leading the club to consecutive deep playoff runs.

Bowman defended the move by saying the roster needed âa different voice,â but that explanation has drawn sharp criticism across NHL circles.
Speaking on TSNâs OverDrive, Bryan Hayes questioned how much blame should fall on management instead of behind the bench.
âWhen they hire the next coach, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will have 10 coaches in 15 seasons,â Hayes said. âThis would be his 10th coach in 15 years.â
Former NHL forward Jeff OâNeill went further, directly targeting Bowmanâs roster construction.
âThere are GMs in the National Hockey League that are getting away with murder,â OâNeill said.
Following this, Hayes questioned, âThe GMs are doing a horrible job and blaming the coach. Is that what youâre saying?â
The criticism is hard to dismiss when examining Edmontonâs season. Bowmanâs biggest move came in December when he traded Stuart Skinner and to for . The deal crippled Edmontonâs defensive structure and destroyed its goaltending stability.
Stan Bowman was criticized for his handling of the team, particularly after firing coach Kris Knoblauch despite his successful tenure.

âYou donât think that thereâs circumstances youâre telling me Stan Bowman can go out there, the guy that scored the game-winner Kulak, last night,â Bowman said, pointing to Brett Kulakâs OT goal in round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Colorado Avalanche. âThey just had to get rid of him and bring in some different pieces.â
The Oilers finished 29th in save percentage at .883. Jarry struggled badly, while Edmonton surrendered 4.33 goals per game during the Anaheim series. Kulak, meanwhile, got traded to Colorado from Pittsburgh and became the exact type of steady defender Edmonton lacked after the trade.
OâNeill also pointed to questionable cap management despite Connor McDavid taking a below-market extension to help management improve the roster.
âYou know, who they signed? Jake Walman [and Trent Frederick,]â OâNeill said. âTrent Frederick, they had to give an eight-year deal to. So, thereâs mistakes there, and you just gotta gas the coach.â
Fredericâs eight-year contract immediately became one of the leagueâs most criticized deals after he managed only seven points in 74 games. In the playoffs, he had no points in four games.

Former Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch at Rogers Arena
Knoblauch deserved criticism for Edmontonâs defensive regression and broken penalty kill, but the larger issue was roster imbalance. The Oilers remained heavily dependent on McDavid and Leon Draisaitl while receiving almost no depth scoring.
Injuries worsened the situation, but contenders survive injuries through structure and depth. Edmonton had neither by spring.
Former NHL goalie Jamie McLennan summed up the broader frustration during the same TSN segment.
âEveryone has to own it,â McLennan said.
That is now the pressure facing Bowman. McDavidâs contract discount created a rare championship window, yet Edmonton burned assets trying to repair mistakes made months earlier. Another coaching hire may calm the noise temporarily, but around the league, many executives believe the real questions sit above the bench.
