Olympic champion Gable Steveson signs with UFC, debut set for the summer

Just eights months into his MMA career, Gable Steveson can call himself a UFC fighter.

Steveson, an Olympic wrestling champion, is set to debut in the Octagon on July 11 at UFC 327 as part of the promotion’s annual International Fight Week festivities.

UFC announced the signing Saturday during UFC 327. Steveson is widely considered the top heavyweight prospect in all of MMA and has openly coveted a chance in the UFC.

An opponent for Steveson’s debut has not yet been determined, UFC CEO Dana White confirmed late Saturday night.

Steveson, 25, is one of the greatest wrestling talents of his era. Along with being a two-time NCAA Division I national champion and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner — the award given annually to collegiate athletics' top freestyle wrestler — he is best known for his run through the 2020 Olympic Games, where he stunned the global field at just 21 years old to become the youngest freestyle wrestler in his division to ever win gold.

Steveson has since emerged as one of the most highly-touted prospects in MMA history.

He is a perfect 4-0 with four knockout wins across multiple combat sports disciplines since making his pro MMA debut in September with a highlight-reel first-round stoppage of Braden Petersen. Steveson transitioned over to Mike Perry's Dirty Boxing promotion for another impressive 15-second knockout of Billy Swanson in October, then followed it with a brutal 24-second knockout of Kevin Hein in an MMA return bout in late November.

Stevenson kicked off 2026 with another first-round MMA stoppage, this time against Hugo Lezama, for which Uncrowned was cageside in Mexico City to document.

Steveson also had brief stints with the NFL's Buffalo Bills and WWE before making the full-time transition to MMA.

The Olympic champion has not been shy to voice his desire to one day fight in the UFC, and has often cited UFC legend Jon Jones as his primary mentor in MMA.

This past November, following his quick win over Hein, Steveson spoke to Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show” about when he expected to feel ready to jump to the UFC:

"Whenever I feel confident enough. I feel confident right now. But whenever I feel like we are at that time, that Jon looks me in the face and says, 'Hey, now is the time to take that next step' — when he says it, we'll be ready and take it from there. But man, I'm fully confident right now that I can go into a big promotion and make waves. But I'm not at that point, and I don't like to speak too far ahead. I do see myself being something special.

"It's [Jones'] call, but ultimately it's my call, too. We have a good transparency on what he thinks is best, but he also listens to a lot of things I say. He's also really big on, 'If you want to go ahead and do it, let's do it.' So I think that's where we're at with our relationship, and he'll make the best call for me. Competitive-wise, I think he'll know — and I'll know — when I'm ready."

That time, it appears, has now come less than a full year into Steveson’s MMA run.
