Nash Hutmacher is switching from defensive tackle to offensive guard for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2026. The undrafted free agent from Nebraska will face a steep learning curve in adapting to his new position.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making an intriguing experiment along the offensive line, as defensive tackle Nash Hutmacher is officially making the switch to offensive guard despite never previously playing the position.
Hutmacher, who joined the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft, spent his college career at Nebraska playing along the defensive front. Now, the 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman is being tasked with learning an entirely new position at the NFL level.
It’s a major transition, but one Tampa Bay may believe is worth the gamble because of Hutmacher’s unique traits. Physically, he already fits the mold of an NFL interior offensive lineman. He possesses natural power, thick lower-body strength, and the kind of anchor ability teams covet at guard. But what may make the move especially interesting is his wrestling background, as it's something the Buccaneers have seen translate extremely well before.
All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs also comes from a wrestling background, something he has often credited for helping develop his balance, leverage, hand usage, and body control. Those same qualities are exactly what offensive line coaches look for when developing interior blockers. For Hutmacher, the learning curve will still be steep. Playing defensive tackle and offensive guard may both happen in the trenches, but the responsibilities are completely different. Defensive linemen attack gaps and react instinctively, while offensive linemen must process protections, maintain technique, and respond with control against complex pass-rush looks.
The Buccaneers have consistently prioritized physicality and versatility up front, and Hutmacher brings both.
There are no guarantees the transition works. Learning a brand-new position at the professional level is one of the toughest challenges in football. But if the Buccaneers can unlock Hutmacher’s athletic traits and toughness at guard, they may have found themselves a fascinating project in the trenches.
