Mike Ross has stepped down as the West Boylston football coach after leading the team to three consecutive Super Bowl titles. His final game was a loss to Randolph in the Division 8 Super Bowl on December 6, 2025.
WORCESTER — As Mike Ross walked off the field at Gillette Stadium in 2024, after his team secured its third straight Super Bowl title with a 22-16 win over Randolph, the West Boylston football coach was happy.
And thirsty.
“The kids are resilient; they’re tough,” Ross told the T&G on Dec. 6, 2024. “Now, it’s time to go get a beer.”
On Dec. 6, 2025, Ross departed the same field in Foxboro following his team’s 21-0 loss to Randolph in the Division 8 Super Bowl. That moment turned out to be the last time Ross would lead the Lions on the gridiron.

On April 27, Ross announced to his football team that he was stepping down from his role as head coach for personal reasons.
“I’m going to take a year off and I could come back at some point, but I can’t coach this year,” Ross told the T&G on May 9. “They treated me great. I have nothing but great things to say about (West Boylston). The kids, the administrators, the parents. I was treated like gold there.”

And Ross led the West Boylston football team through a golden era over the past decade.
“It’s definitely sad to see him go,” said former West Boylston player Luke Foley, who graduated in 2024 and whose older brother, Noah, also played for Ross. “But Coach Ross had a great career there. The program is definitely going to miss him, and he did a lot of good things for West Boylston.”
After Ross began coaching high school football as an assistant in the mid 1990s, he took over at North High in 2000. He went 66-23 in seven seasons with the Polar Bears, going 12-0 and winning a Super Bowl in 2002 and capping a 33-2 run with another title in 2004.

Ross then left for Grafton High, his alma mater, in 2008 and went 40-31 in six years while capturing his 100th career win and then a Super Bowl title in 2012 with the Gators.
Following the 2013 season, Ross stepped down at Grafton before taking over as head coach at West Boylston in 2015. In 11 seasons with the Lions, Ross went 102-22 and won three straight Super Bowl titles from 2022-24.

“He was a great coach and a great person,” said West Boylston junior Charlie Metzmaker, who played defensive end and offensive guard for the Lions last fall. “You can really tell when a coach cares about his players and well-being of them, and he was one of them. I was honored to be able to play for him.”
“He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had,” Foley said.

Across 25 seasons of coaching high school football in Central Mass., Ross compiled a 208-76 record.
He joins Ken LaChapelle (Northbridge) and Matt Blood (Uxbridge) on the list of other coaches who have stepped down following the 2025 season. The position of head football coach is now open at West Boylston.
“It was disappointing,” said Metzmaker, who called Ross right after he heard the news. “He was the one of the best coaches I could have possibly learned under. He did a lot for me.”

Ross, who lives in Charlton, didn’t rule out a return to the gridiron in the future. But, for right now, he’s stepping away.
Mike Ross takes with him many fond memories from his time spent as head football coach at West Boylston.
“The thing I enjoy the most is the relationships you get with the kids from all the hard work,” Ross said. “More than the wins and losses, it’s the relationships I had with the kids.”
