Oregon Ducks baseball faces No. 1 UCLA Bruins in a crucial series in Los Angeles. Oregon has a strong record but trails UCLA, who is undefeated in Big Ten play.
You don't get to shock the world very often, so when the opportunity comes, you'd better take advantage of it.
That's what faces the Oregon Ducks baseball team this weekend as they go down to Los Angeles and face the No. 1 team in the country, the UCLA Bruins. Oregon hasn't faced the No. 1 team in the country very often in its history. The Ducks are 3-7 in such games, but they did take two of three from the Bruins last season at PK Park, if that means anything.
UCLA is a legitimate No. 1 as the Bruins have an incredible record of 44-4 and are undefeated in Big Ten play at 24-0. They have swept eight straight conference series. Those are numbers that are almost impossible to believe. To put it in perspective, the Ducks have a great overall record of 34-14 and that is still 10 whole games behind UCLA. It had a 27-game winning streak earlier in the season that was snapped when UC-Santa Barbara defeated the Bruins.
Yes, UCLA is good, but so are the Ducks, and Oregon might be the best team the Bruins have faced this season. The Ducks have won eight of their last nine and will be sending ace pitcher Will Sanford to the mound. He is 6-1 on the season with an earned run average of 3.64. He will be facing Bruins pitcher Wylan Moss, a righty who is 4-1 this year with an ERA of 1.99.
Oregon hasn't played for a few days. Its brief series with Grand Canyon was canceled, and the last time the Ducks played, they suffered a 9-4 loss to Washington. For Oregon's sake, hopefully, the long layoff in between games won't hurt it too much as the Ducks will have to play well in all phases to capture this road series.
The game starts at 7 p.m. PT on Friday night and will be aired on the Big Ten Network. Follow along here for our live blog, scores, and analysis for Game 1 of this huge Big Ten weekend series.
