The biggest question facing every WNBA team in training camp
WNBA training camps open with key questions for each team.
The Oregon Ducks and Nebraska Cornhuskers are tied in their weekend baseball series after Oregon won the first game 7-6 and Nebraska took the second 10-8. Both teams have shown strong offensive performances, but Oregon's bullpen has struggled.
Another Sunday, another rubber match on deck for the No. 21 Oregon Ducks (25-10, 9-5 Big Ten), this time at home against the No. 19 Nebraska Cornhuskers (27-8, 12-2 Big Ten).
The Ducks and Cornhuskers split the first two games of a weekend series that has featured plenty of offense. Despite limping into the series, Oregon has scored a combined 15 runs in the two games, although the bullpen has suffered.
Oregon captured a 7-6 victory on Friday to begin the series, holding off a late rally by the Cornhuskers. The Ducks led 7-2 in the eighth inning, but Nebraska stormed back, even putting the go-ahead run in scoring position in the ninth, before the final out was made.
Nebraska got its revenge on Saturday, handing Oregon a 10-8 defeat. The Ducks again jumped to a big 5-0 lead early on, but the Cornhuskers again rallied and this time completed the comeback. Nebraska mashed three home runs in a six-run fourth inning. The Ducks battled late, but more faltering from the typically dependable bullpen down the stretch cost them a potential series win over a ranked foe.
Heading into the third and final game of the series, it’s a resume spot for the Ducks, who could really use a ranked-series victory this weekend at PK Park. While the arms have cooled, the bats have heated up. In this series specifically, the Ducks have a few bats who have really taken off.
Brayden Jaksa, the freshman backup catcher, has collected four hits and a home run while playing first base this weekend. Naulivou Lauaki Jr. has stepped up as the designated hitter with four hits of his own, including two homers on Saturday. Ryan Cooney, who has slid down to hit third in the lineup, reached base five times and had four RBI in yesterday’s loss.
On the mound, the Ducks will turn to right-hander Cal Scolari (4-0, 2.81 ERA) once again to close out the series. Scolari is looking for a bounce back outing after lasting just four innings on the road against Michigan last Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits.
For the Cornhuskers, it will be right-hander Cooper Katskee (5-0, 2.79 ERA) on the hill. Katskee is having a great season so far for Nebraska, which has not lost in any of his 10 starts. Last time out, Katskee covered seven innings against Penn State and allowed three runs.
Follow along for the live inning-by-inning updates once the game begins. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PT. The game will stream live on BigTenPlus.com with a subscription.
