MIAMI — The first inning of the Orioles’ game Wednesday was a wash.
Pete Alonso got things started with a three-run home run, extending his hitting streak to seven games with his seventh long ball of the season. The Miami Marlins answered right back with three runs off Orioles starter Brandon Young, all scored with two outs.
The teams essentially played an eight-inning game from there, and Baltimore pulled out the 7-4 victory on three RBI doubles — one by Dylan Beavers and two for Adley Rutschman — and a run-scoring triple off the bat of Blaze Alexander. Young shook off the rough first frame and retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced to post six innings for his first quality start of the year and the Orioles’ first since Thursday.
Alonso, fresh off scoring four runs in the club’s 9-7 win Tuesday, got ahold of a fastball from Marlins starter Eury Pérez and crushed it 407 feet to left-center field. The Orioles’ prized offseason acquisition is 9 for 25 (.360) with three home runs and four doubles since the start of his hitting streak, rounding into form after a slow start to the season.
His blast gave Baltimore (17-20) an early cushion that Young immediately squandered. After recording two quick outs to start the frame, he allowed five straight Marlins to reach base, with center fielder Jakob Marsee and right fielder Owen Caissie accounting for the damage via a two-run double and RBI single, respectively.
It was the latest example of a frustrating trend for the Orioles: They’ve scored three or more runs in an inning 16 times this season and allowed at least one run in the frame that immediately followed on 10 of those occasions.

But Young settled in, finishing with just the three runs allowed on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. The right-hander, coming off a disastrous 10-run outing in the Orioles’ doubleheader Thursday, resumed his promising play as an injury replacement at the back end of their rotation.
With Cade Povich slated to start Thursday and Trevor Rogers trending toward a return from the injured list Monday, Young made his case to stick around for at least another turn.
The Marlins kept within striking distance, manufacturing a run off Grant Wolfram in the seventh, but the Orioles maintained their lead by tacking on a run in each of the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Six of their seven hits went for extra bases as they plated seven or more runs in consecutive games for just the second time all season.
Anthony Nunez took over for Wolfram in the seventh, stranded a baserunner and pitched a clean eighth for a bounce-back outing. Rico Garcia recorded his second save of the season with closer Ryan Helsley on the injured list. Garcia worked around a leadoff walk to close out the game. He has allowed just one hit in 17 innings this season.
