The 26-year-old Encarnacion-Strand was designated for assignment by the Reds on April 8 after parts of three seasons in Cincinnati. In 128 games with the Reds, Encarnacion-Strand hit .233 with a .679 OPS and 21 home runs.
Encarnacion-Strand can play first base and third base, which will come in handy, as first baseman Ryan Mountcastle will miss a good chunk of time with a left foot fracture. On Monday, the Orioles placed him and transferred right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo on/to the 60-day injured list as part of their continued roster shuffling.
To take Mountcastle's spot on the active roster, the Orioles selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson from Triple-A Norfolk. The 31-year-old Wilso was hitting .195 with an OPS of .664 in 12 games. Wilson will offer the Orioles versatility, as he can play everywhere on the diamond.
