The Otz Era just got a whole lot longer.
Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard announced Wednesday that head coach T.J. Otzelberger has agreed to a 10 year contract extension through 2036 with an annual salary of $6 million, making him one of the highest paid basketball coaches in the country.
In five seasons in Ames, Otzelberger has transformed Iowa State basketball into a perennial NCAA Tournament program. Three Sweet Sixteens in five years. Consistent Top 25 appearances. A culture built on defense, toughness, and player development that has become the envy of the Big 12.
Pollard made his feelings clear in his statement saying Iowa State was committed to rewarding Otzelberger for what he has built and excited to continue that success under his leadership. Otzelberger echoed the sentiment, calling Ames home for his family and expressing gratitude for the support of President Dr. Cook and Pollard.
For a program navigating real financial headwinds, committing $6 million annually to a head coach is a significant statement of priorities. It says plainly that Iowa State believes the return on investment is worth it. Based on the last five years, it is hard to argue otherwise.
