Man Utd U18 head coach Darren Fletcher initially took over for two games before resuming his work in the academy and leaving the task to his former teammate.
Carrick swiftly distanced himself from Amorim’s much-maligned three-man backline, adopting a more conventional 4-2-3-1 formation. He also reinstated Kobbie Mainoo as a regular starter. The latter was a mere benchwarmer during the Portuguese manager’s reign.
These simple yet effective changes immediately paid dividends, as the Wallsend native went on to win his first four matches in charge, including victories over the two title challengers, Manchester City and Arsenal, in his first two outings.

Therefore, Carrington insider Sully reveals that although no official decision has been communicated just yet, Man Utd have internally decided to move forward with Carrick.
*“The expectation is for MUFC to offer Michael Carrick the permanent head coach role for next season,”*posted Sully on his X (formerly Twitter)account on Monday night.
“No concrete talks or official decision has been made yet but it’s looking increasingly likely that the club want to continue with the 44-year-old following impressive past months.”
While we still await official confirmation, the news has been in the air for quite some time, with all indications pointing towards the former England international.
The lack of available top-notch profiles has boosted Carrick’s chances, as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil), Thomas Tuchel (England), and Luis Enrique (PSG) are all planning to prolong their current spells.
Nevertheless, the former United midfielder has certainly done his part, whether by producing solid results and improved performances, keeping his head down and saying the right things, or immersing himself in the club’s academy project and emphasising the importance of homebred players at United.
Although the likes of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville have had their reservations, the majority of Carrick’s former MUFC teammates have vividly spoken in his favour, including Wayne Rooney and Patric Evra.
It appears that INEOS agree with the second opinion, as the manager’s confirmation is now only a matter of time.
