The Green Bay Packers signed receiver Jayden Reed to a three-year contract extension worth $50.25 million. This move secures Reed as a key part of the team's offense despite previous injury setbacks.
Amid the excitement of the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers got an important piece of business done, signing Jayden Reed to a three-year contract extension worth $50.25 million in new money.
The significance of it got lost in the shuffle of the draft and has not received much publicity as a result, but it was another example of Brian Gutekunst making some uncertainty around a player entering a contract year, and his atypical wide receiver room, work in his favor.
Looking at the decision to re-sign Reed in itself, it made sense for Green Bay to lock him up as a key part of the offense for years to come
It feels like a long time ago now, but Reed led the Packers in receiving in each of his first two years, before injuries derailed his 2025 campaign. He dealt with a Jonesâ fracture in his foot during training camp, then broke his collarbone in week two.
Between the regular and postseason, he had 2,022 yards from scrimmage and 17 touchdowns in his first two years in the NFL. The only other receivers to put up those numbers or better since 2006 are:

Thatâs good company. His extension carries an average annual value of $16.75 million, which ranks 29th among wide receivers, placing him between Romeo Doubs and Rasheed Shaheed ($17 million) and Cooper Kupp ($15 million). His AAV is a little around $4 million more than rookie Carnell Tate.
Following an injury-riddled 2025, it would have been easy for the Packers to be conservative and take a âwait and seeâ approach with Reed entering a contract year.
Instead, they were proactive, betting on the talent he showed in his first two seasons, and got him signed long term at what could turn out to be a bargain rate.
It is of course reminiscent of the contract Green Bay struck with Christian Watson a year ago.
It was a slightly different situation as he was coming off a torn ACL, and ended up missing the first six games of 2025. He got a one-year, $11 million extension to give him and the Packers some security rather than going into a contract year with his future up in the air.
That paid off in a big way, as Watson was excellent after returning from injury and would be making a lot more than $11 million in 2026 if he had been a pending free agent.
The combination of Watson and Reedâs AAVs adds up to $27.75 million, which is just above D.J. Mooreâs individual number, and is lower than Alec Pierce.
Green Bay is able to give Watson more of a true extension this offseason if they wish, and he could probably demand around $27 million right now, which would place him in the Jameson Williams/Alec Pierce range.
If he wants to bet on himself, he could make more next year from Green Bay or someone else, but it would be understandable if the team is not willing to go to the top of the market at present, given he has struggled to stay healthy and has never hit 700 receiving yards in a season.
Reed has two seasons with more yards than Watsonâs best, and signed for far less than $27 million, but of course he was not in as strong of a position when signing as Watson is now.
The extension of Reed raised questions over whether the Packers could still pay Watson as well, but it seems they are still in a solid position to do so.
If Watson was to get $27m per year, Green Bay would be paying around $50 million in AAV for the core pieces receiver room, including Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Eight teams are currently paying more than that, and a couple more teams are right at that mark.
Another way to look at it is that if Watson does get $27 million per on a three-year extension, when also factoring in the one-year $11 million deal he signed for 2026 as part of it, the AAV across those four years lowers to $23 million.
Paying both is very feasible, especially if neither is at the top of the market, and given the cap hits will likely be low early in the deals. They do need to extend Tucker Kraft as well though.
It will be interesting to see whether the Packers get another discount of sorts as he, like Watson a year ago, is entering a contract year while working his way back from an ACL tear, but it may be a different situation, as his performance before the injury last year was spectacular.
Along with the injuries, Green Bayâs desire to spread the ball around on offense has arguably naturally suppressed the market value of the receivers within it, which has put the team in a situation where they can pay multiple players at more reasonable prices and keep the party going.
From the players' side, they have been given trust, the luxury of not being under pressure to quickly return to full form as return from injury, and life-changing money paid instantly in a signing bonus. It has been a win-win for both parties.
While the middle class of wide receiver contracts did not really exist or seem like a place teams wanted to be, either paying players top dollar or not paying them at all, the Packers have made it work for them.
