Losing Malik Willis in free agency unquestionably puts more pressure on the Green Bay Packers to add a quarterback capable of giving Jordan Love a run for his money in training camp.
CBS Sports’ John Breech is under the impression that an underwhelming Indianapolis Colts signal-caller could be that guy, prompting him to send him to the Packers for a 2026 fifth-round pick in his recent trade idea.
“The Packers have two fifth-round picks, and if they can use one of those to acquire (Anthony) Richardson, then this deal would make a lot of sense for Green Bay,” Breech wrote Tuesday. “Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn't close the door on a possible Richardson return in 2026, but a trade still feels more likely.”
“The Packers need to find a suitable backup for Jordan Love, and although they could look to take someone in the draft, making a trade for Richardson might actually have a higher upside. Under LaFleur's tutelage, Richardson could potentially turn into a quality NFL quarterback.”
An offseason split would do wonders for Richardson as he attempts to prove he can be a productive NFL quarterback. The perception surrounding Richardson’s talent/passion will continue to be negative as long as he’s a member of the Colts’ organization.
Joining Love on the Packers while vowing to never check himself out of a game due to fatigue (incident occurred against the in the third quarter during the 2024-25 season) would potentially help him revive his career at his next stop.
The Packers need a suitable backup for Jordan Love after losing Malik Willis, and acquiring Richardson could provide competition and potential upside.

Although it’s unlikely he would win the starting job in Green Bay upon his arrival, he could, at the very least, morph into a respectable backup under LaFleur.
