The Indianapolis Colts re-signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a two-year deal this offseason to serve as the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, leaving Anthony Richardson's future uncertain.
Richardson appeared in just two games in 2025, as Jones beat him out for the starting role, and he also dealt with an eye injury for most of the year.
With Jones reprising his role as the starter after leading the Colts to an 8-4 record before tearing his Achilles, Richardson has no long-term future in Indianapolis, which is why the franchise granted him permission to seek a trade at the end of February.
Richardson named possible 2026 NFL Draft trade candidate
Though Richardson has yet to be dealt, Sportsnaut's Matt Johnson believes the Colts could finally cut ties with the first-round bust during the 2026 NFL Draft.
"The Indianapolis Colts are all-in on Daniel Jones, even coming off Achilles surgery. That seems like a massive gamble to take, especially with the head coach and general manager both on the hot seat in 2026, but it’s the path this franchise chose. It’s time for the organization to do the right thing and trade Anthony Richardson in what is effectively a contract year for him. Richardson obviously should land somewhere that can focus on developing him behind the scenes, only bringing him onto the field to utilize his athleticism or in case of an injury. A fresh start is in everyone’s best interest," Johnson said.
Packers, Rams, Bucs, and Ravens named top landing spots for Richardson
Johnson listed the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Baltimore Ravens as the top suitors for Richardson in a trade with the Colts.
Green Bay has already been linked to Richardson by Colts team reporter Stephen Holder, and it would make a ton of sense. The Packers lost their backup quarterback, Malik Willis, to the Miami Dolphins in free agency and have yet to replace him.
Landing in Green Bay would give Richardson the chance to learn from an experienced offensive coach in Matt LaFleur and serve as the backup behind Jordan Love. It would be an ideal spot for the Florida product to develop.
Los Angeles would also be a solid fit for Richardson, as learning from Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay would be incredibly beneficial for the young signal-caller.
Though Tampa Bay and Baltimore could add Richardson for competition in their quarterback rooms, it doesn't make much sense, as both squads already have viable backup quarterbacks in Jake Browning for the Bucs and Tyler Huntley for the Ravens.
During the 2026 League Meetings last month, Colts general manager Chris Ballard left the door open for Richardson to return to Indianapolis next season. However, a fresh start for both sides would be logical.
