Packers sign new Jordan Love insurance plan after Malik Willis exit

Love, who missed two games in each of the past two seasons, enjoyed a solid campaign in 2025. In 15 starts, he completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,381 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Still, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst recognized the need for a reliable backup, even before signing Taylor.

“It’s a really important thing for us. Jordan, the last two years has missed some time, and we’ve needed somebody to come in there and play at a high level to help win those games,” he told ESPN. “So, whoever’s called upon we’re going to expect that and when you lose a guy like Malik, it is something you’re going to have to replace, and we’re going to try to do that.”

The Packers’ roster also includes quarterbacks Desmond Ridder, Kyle McCord and Kyron Drones.

Willis earns starting job

Willis served as a competent backup for Green Bay, especially in 2024 when he won both games he started. As a Packer, Willis completed an impressive 70 of 89 passes (78.7 percent) for 972 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

That performance earned Willis a three-year, $67.5 million free-agent deal from the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins were ready to move on from former starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, whom they released.
