The San Diego Padres have many questions surrounding the back end of their starting rotation.
With Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta out, pitchers like Walker Buehler and Griffin Canning will be relied upon to pitch deep into ballgames.
That may be an unsustainable ask throughout the year, so the Padres could turn to depth in the minors.
However, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote on Wednesday that San Diego could be moving on from a lefty who has yet to make his season debut in the Majors despite all the injuries and inconsistency.

"[JP] Sears was to the Mason Miller trade what Josh Bell was to the Juan Soto trade back in 2022, only with several additional years of team control," Miller wrote.
Sears, 30, made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2022 and has already been traded twice in the last four years.
"In five starts last season, he gave the Padres a 5.47 ERA. And even with Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, and Nick Pivetta all just expensive spectators, they haven't felt like calling him up yet in 2026," Miller added. "But look for them to include him in some way in whatever this summer's AJ Preller special ends up being."
If the Padres cannot find much use for Sears, surely another team will. He allows a ton of home runs, but can be a valuable innings eater for a non-contender.
