The San Diego Padres are one of the many teams around Major League Baseball that fans cannot rule out making a surprise blockbuster deal at any given moment.
A.J. Preller has a knack for wheeling and dealing, and this year, with a Padres roster that has a chance at a World Series, it might be the second straight season with a blockbuster move at the deadline.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report linked the Padres and Preller to one possible blockbuster trade, predicting that the Padres could be "all-in" on a Los Angeles Angels ace.
"By the actual trade deadline, the Padres' rotation might be solid," Miller writes. "... San Diego would be all-in on someone like Sandy Alcantara or if the deadline were today."
The article does not specify the name of the Angels ace with a 1.66 ERA.
A.J. Preller is known for his aggressive trading style and has a history of making significant deals, especially around the trade deadline.
The Padres are viewed as 'all-in' due to their strong roster and the opportunity to compete for a World Series title, prompting speculation about a blockbuster trade.

While the Padres might have a good-enough rotation by the deadline, it's always very possible that Preller can swing a trade for Jose Soriano and land a pitcher that can lead the rotation on a deep postseason run.
Soriano has posted a 1.66 ERA through nine starts this season with an MLB-best 2.7 bWAR. In 54.1 innings pitched, Soriano has 61 strikeouts with a 1.049 WHIP.
While he might not be as dominant as his 1.66 ERA indicates, Soriano is still a pitcher worthy of being a team's ace for a postseason run.
The only issue is that the Padres would have to be all-in for the 2026 season to justify acquiring Soriano. He's just 24 years old and is under club control through the 2028 season. Such a player will be very expensive to acquire.
Miller is linking the Padres to Soriano as one pitcher the team could go "all-in" to acquire. It would take such a large commitment, but adding Soriano to the mix of Nick Pivetta, Michael King, Randy Vasquez, Lucas Giolito, and a few others would be fun.
If the Padres want to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West title, a move for someone like Soriano might have to be in play. He'd be a massive upgrade for the rotation, though he'd cost an all-in price to acquire from the Angels.
