The Carolina Panthers extended quarterback Bryce Young's rookie contract to include a fifth season of control.
Panthers general manager Dan Morgan broke the NFL news Wednesday while appearing on SirixXM's "Mad Dog Sports Radio."
"I'm actually signing his fifth-year option today," Morgan said.
By extending Young's deal for a fifth season, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft choice will remain under organizational control through 2027. Young is scheduled to make $29.5 million in the final year of the deal.
The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner seeks a long-term deal in the $50 million-per-season range. This season, Young counts $12 million against the NFL salary cap.
Young, who came back to earn the extension after a 2-15 rookie campaign and a Week 3 benching during his second season. After re-assuming his starting spot midway through 2024, Young established career highs in completion percentage (63.8), passing yards (3,011), and touchdown passes (23) while leading the 8-9 Panthers to an NFC South title and their first playoff appearance since 2017.
Entering his age-25 season, Young has a career record of 14-30 but continues to earn his teammates' trust.
