Patriots 2026 game-by-game predictions following schedule release

Now that the New England Patriots' 2026 NFL schedule has been made official, we can begin the long process of breaking down the team's future matchups.

Leave the party hats at home because there will be no "cupcake" schedule for the Patriots this season. They will be facing multiple playoff contenders in their second year under head coach Mike Vrabel. Last year, they took the league by storm by winning 14 games after back-to-back 4-13 seasons.

Never say never in the NFL, but it's highly unlikely that they will have a similar run in 2026. That doesn't mean they won't win the division, compete in the playoffs and potentially get back to the Super Bowl. The ceiling is high for a Patriots team that should be significantly better than they were last season.

Here are my early game-by-game predictions for the team in 2026:

Week 1, Sept. 9: Patriots at Seattle Seahawks

This being a Week 1 matchup makes it more likely that the Patriots pull off an upset. They won't be facing a Seahawks team in midseason form for this matchup. Instead, they'll get the defending Super Bowl champions coming off an offseason where they lost multiple key contributors, including Super Bowl LX MVP running back Kenneth Walker III.

The Patriots gave the Seahawks fits defensively in the Super Bowl, and on the offensive side of the ball, Drake Maye will have more weapons than ever before.

Prediction: WIN

Week 2, Sept. 20: Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Patriots have always had the Steelers' number. Even last season, it took a whopping five turnovers for the Steelers to survive in New England by a 21-14 margin. Despite them still being a good football team, Pittsburgh's aging roster is starting to show cracks.

Prediction: WIN

Week 3, Sept. 27: Patriots at Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are finally headed in the right direction. Trevor Lawrence is coming off one of his best NFL seasons, and Jacksonville is building a juggernaut on defense. This will be one of the toughest games on the 2026 schedule for the Patriots.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 4, Oct. 4: Patriots at Buffalo Bills

It's hard to envision the Patriots upsetting the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in back-to-back years. While New England has clearly closed the gap in the AFC East, if not outright overtaken the division, Josh Allen remains a thorn in their side.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 5, Oct. 11: Patriots vs. Las Vegas Raiders

The Patriots lost in their season opener last year against the Raiders. Looking back, it ended up being one of the most surprising losses of the year considering how both teams ended the season. The Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl, and the Raiders only won three games. There is a lot of excitement in Las Vegas about the arrival of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, but it will take some time before the Raiders are a viable contender.

Prediction: WIN

Week 6, Oct. 18: Patriots vs. New York Jets

This might be the easiest game of the season on the Patriots' schedule. The Jets coming to Gillette Stadium after only winning three games last season feels like a lay-up victory for New England. A loss here would signal major issues for the team.

Week 7, Oct. 22: Patriots at Chicago Bears

Like Maye, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears destined for greatness in the NFL. This matchup could turn into a fun offensive shootout between the two young quarterbacks. The Bears should have the edge with this game being at Soldier Field.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 8, Nov. 1: Patriots at Miami Dophins

The Dolphins underwent a fire sale this offseason, which included the team cutting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and former All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill. They also traded star wideout Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos. The Dolphins are at rock bottom with no way up this season. Not even a home game can save them from a likely blowout in this matchup.

Prediction: WIN

Week 9, Nov. 8: Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

The Packers hope to get All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons back in the mix after he suffered a torn ACL last December. Will Parsons go right back to work as one of the most feared pass rushers in the NFL, or will he take a step back? The Packers can't afford for him to do the latter when trying to slow down Maye and the Patriots' offense on the road.

Prediction: WIN

Week 10, Nov. 15: Patriots at Detroit Lions

Technically, the Patriots will be the away team in this game, but it's obvious that they have a longstanding presence in Germany. So this will be a home game away from Gillette Stadium. The Lions are loaded with offensive firepower, but the Patriots will be good enough to match it this season.

Prediction: WIN

Week 11: BYE WEEK

Week 12, Nov. 29: Patriots at Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are one of the more intriguing AFC teams this season. They sputtered late last year due to injuries and got manhandled by the Patriots in the first round of the playoffs. This will be a much different challenge with quarterback Justin Herbert and running back Omarion Hampton both being healthy.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 13, Dec. 6: Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills

The Patriots will get their revenge for the Bills' comeback win against them at Gillette Stadium last year. Josh Allen and company rallied from a 21-point deficit to knock off New England in their home building. It was a crushing defeat that brought an end to the Patriots' 10-game winning streak.

Prediction: WIN

Week 14, Dec. 10: Patriots vs. Minnesota Vikings

Will J.J. McCarthy or Kyler Murray be the quarterback in Minnesota? That will be the biggest question ahead of this matchup. The Vikings took a major step back last season after allowing Sam Darnold to walk out the door. They also traded their former Pro Bowl edge rusher, Jonathan Greenard, to the Philadelphia Eagles.

How good will rookie defensive end Caleb Banks be in his first NFL season? That remains to be seen, but the Vikings don't appear to be a team on an upward trajectory at the moment.

Week 15, Dec. 21: Patriots at Kansas City Chiefs

If the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, beating them at Arrowhead Stadium will be a daunting task for the Patriots. Make no mistake, the Chiefs have lost some of their aura of invincibility after failing to make the playoffs last season. But it's hard to bet against Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid for a second straight year. This will be a tall task for Maye and company.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 16, Dec. 27: Patriots at New York Jets

The Jets aren't the same dumpster fire team on paper that they were last year. They've added some promising rookie pieces that they hope will put an end to them being the perennial punchline team in the NFL. However, it's hard to envision that turnaround season happening in 2026. Geno Smith is a capable enough veteran quarterback to help the team improve, but he's also a 35-year-old player coming off his worst season in the last four years.

Prediction: WIN

Week 17, Jan. 2-4: Patriots vs. Denver Broncos

NFL fans will finally get the AFC Championship matchup they were hoping to see, before quarterback Bo Nix broke his ankle late in the Divisional Round game between the Broncos and Buffalo Bills. The Patriots ultimately defeated a Broncos team led by backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham in a snowstorm. The Broncos added standout wide receiver Jaylen Waddle on offense, and they should once again be one of the best defensive teams in the NFL.

Prediction: LOSS

Week 18, Jan. 9-10: Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are hitting the reset button on their roster. That doesn't bode well for their win-loss record for the foreseeable future, especially in the 2026 season. A road trip to Foxborough to take on the Drake Maye-led Patriots is sure to end ugly.

Prediction: WIN

Patriots overall 2026 record prediction: 11-6

The Patriots will be a much better team in 2026, but they'll take a step back in the win category due to a significantly harder schedule. However, they will still be in the thick of things when it comes to competing with the Bills for the AFC East division title and making it to the playoffs. Anything can happen once a team makes it to the postseason, as the Patriots showed last season.
