The New England Patriots have reportedly made a rather obvious decision on cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is set to enter his fourth year in the NFL and has become one of the best cornerbacks in the league. So, on Tuesday, the team has reportedly picked up his fifth-year option, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
According to OverTheCap, Gonzalez’s fifth-year option is projected to cost $18,119,000 in 2027.
Although the Patriots picked up the fifth-year option, as no contract extension has been reached, it doesn’t rule out an extension happening later on. But, all it does is secure that Gonzalez is at least part of New England’s roster for two more seasons.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, made it clear days after the Super Bowl loss that he wanted to sign an extension in New England.
“Oh, yeah, no doubt,” Gonzalez said, via the Boston Herald. “This is where I got drafted, and I don’t want to be anywhere else. … I’m not really trying to get into all of that. I mean, it’s kind of more my agents, they’ll deal with that and keep me up to speed on it.”
By picking up Christian Gonzalez's fifth-year option, the Patriots ensure that he will remain under contract for the 2025 season, providing stability to their defense.
Christian Gonzalez has emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the league during his first three seasons, showcasing his skills and potential.
