This yearâs draft class is deep at the wide receiver position. Even the most casual college football fans are going to be familiar with the names they hear teams taking off the board in rounds two and three.
Besides edge rusher, wide receiver remains the New England Patriots biggest positional need. Nobody is more against drafting a wide receiver with the No. 31 pick than me (trust me), but ESPN writer Ben Solak made an interesting point in an article detailing how the Patriots could âAceâ the draft.
âOne of the draft's big questions is if and how the Patriots address wide receiver at the end of Round 1,â Solak wrote. âIf I were Eliot Wolf and Mike Vrabel, I'd pass on wide receiver in Round 1 but still hit it on Day 2 to keep leverage on the Eagles, who could eventually lower their demands this summer.â
The Patriots are situated perfectly in this draft to secure a premier edge rusher at the end of the first round. I think passing up on a day one starter at the teamâs biggest need to draft a receiver would be a misstep, especially given the Patriots' track record at drafting wideouts.
However, as perfectly situated as they are in the first, they are equally suited to address team needs in the second. Pick No. 63 is going to be the sweet spot for a guy like Chris Bell or Bryce Lance.
The Patriots should consider top prospects from this year's deep wide receiver draft class, particularly those expected to be available in the second and third rounds.
The Patriots have identified wide receiver as their biggest positional need, alongside edge rusher, making it crucial to strengthen their roster.
Drafting a high-profile wide receiver could provide the Patriots with additional leverage in trade negotiations, potentially enhancing their overall strategy.
