New England Patriots quarterback Behren Morton impressed at rookie minicamp despite being labeled one of the worst draft picks. Selected in the seventh round, he may challenge for a backup role behind Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito.
New England Patriots quarterback Behren Morton was one of the standouts at the team's rookie minicamp last weekend.
Morton was selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft to serve as the No. 3 quarterback behind Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito. Not everyone was a fan of the pick, with some arguing that the Patriots could have targeted a position of need and signed an undrafted free agent quarterback instead.
Morton recently made a list as one of the worst picks in the entire draft.
However, as Patriots Wire's Sophie Weller noted, the rookie put on a performance that has some wondering whether he could make a serious push for a backup quarterback role on the team.
Weller wrote:
"Behren Morton was the lone quarterback at Patriots minicamp on Saturday and had an impressive day, making the most of his extra opportunities. Morton went 11-of-11 passing during the 11-on-11 period, making some impressive throws in tight windows. While all the players are still learning the playbook, both on offense and defense, his composure and quickness in the pocket certainly stood out."
With that said, this was only rookie minicamp, and Morton will have to prove himself against the veterans as well. The young quarterback has a long way to go in the development process.
But it was a strong start for a player that the Patriots hope can strengthen their overall quarterback room for the foreseeable future.
