The Philadelphia 76ers are strategizing to contain Jalen Brunson after losing 137-98 to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the East semifinals. Brunson scored 35 points with an impressive shooting performance.
NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia 76ers will need to find a way to slow down Jalen Brunson as they continue with this Round 2 series with the New York Knicks. The Sixers fell to the Knicks 137-98 in Game 1 on Monday, and Brunson was a big reason why New York had so much success.
The star guard out of Villanova was terrific in Game 1 as he went for 35 points on a super-efficient 12-for-18 from the floor, 3-for-6 from deep, and 8-for-8 from the foul line. He also had two steals as he was able to do it all for the Knicks to make things happen against the Sixers to open the East semifinals.
It didn't matter who the Sixers decided to throw onto Brunson whether it was Paul George, Kelly Oubre Jr., or whoever. Brunson had his way in Game 1.
"I mean, you just got to toe the line of being aggressive, keeping him in front and being physical without fouling," said George. "I think it's tricky with how he can draw fouls, but we just got to be smart with how we challenge him defensively."
Obviously, George, Oubre, VJ Edgecombe, and others are coming off a series where they had to battle Boston Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Those two are completely different players and matchups compared to Brunson and the Sixers will have to adjust as this series continues. If one asks Oubre, it's the fact that Brunson has a unique physical attribute that he uses to his abdvantage.

"I just know he has a big head," Oubre deadpanned. "So, it's definitely tough to guard him with his head, doing all that (Oubre moved his head around to show what Brunson does), but yeah, I mean, he's a great player. We've played against him plenty of times, many of times, and we have to make the adjustments that we see on film, but kudos to him. He came out and started the series and did what they had to do at home, and it's up to us to respond."
When asked a follow-up of what he means about Brunson having a big head, Oubre explained it's his braids hitting him in the face that cause problems in a lighthearted moment.
"He’s got the braids," laughed Oubre. "He's a very smart, tactical player. So, he uses all that to his advantage, but, yeah. Hey, I'll be there. I'll be there. He can whip me all he want, but he's not getting free like that."
Either way, the Sixers will have to be better prepared for what Brunson brings to the table in Game 2 on Wednesday. It wouldn't be the end of the world if the Sixers fall down 0-2, as evidenced by them coming back from 3-1 to beat the Celtics in Round 1, but it's not an ideal situation either.
"He's a great player," Edgecombe said of Brunson. "So, he’s gonna make adjustments. Now, it's time for me to make adjustments on how to guard him. So, just go out there, and just play hard. Fight through. Just try to make sure I don't get hit by any screen or anything like that. Just try my best. Just stay in front of him and just make him make difficult shots. I mean, he's gonna make he's gonna make difficult shots. He's a good player."
