Payton Tolle had already faced the New York Yankees before, but Thursday was different.
Last year, Tolle faced one batter in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium, retiring Trent Grisham to end the bottom of the eighth. This time around, he was making his season debut against them with a start at Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox's No. 1 prospect didn't disappoint, twirling six innings of one-run ball against the Yankees in place of the injured Sonny Gray. He racked up 18 swinging strikes and 11 strikeouts, going toe-to-toe with Cam Schlittler and turning in the best start of his young career.

Unfortunately, however, the Red Sox still lost, falling 4-2 and getting swept by New York.
After the game, Tolle opened up about his first career start against the Yankees.
"Especially being part of the Red Sox, you want to beat the Yankees all the time," Tolle told reporters. "As you can tell, this locker room wants more than just a good pitching performance. Happy with how it went, but at the end of the day, we want to win."
The 23-year-old lefty also described the current state of the team, which is 9-16 and last in the AL East.
"I think we just want it. I see a lot of guys in this room who obviously want to win," Tolle said. "We got a lot of care. Just gonna try to come in here and... have fun with it."
Tolle gave Boston a major boost on Thursday, so he'll try to keep doing that and help the team recover from its slow start.
