Penn State has added another player to its hoops roster via the transfer portal, this time from the Division II ranks in University of Alabama-Huntsville guard Thomas Allard, per PSUs official basketball social media page.
The 6’7” Allard averaged 13.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in his lone season at Alabama-Huntsville, shooting nearly 41 percent from the field and just over 32 percent from three-point range. It should be noted that over half (nearly 52 percent) of Allard’s shot attempts were from three-point range. Prior to Alabama-Huntsville, he spent three seasons at Lincoln Memorial University, another D2 program, where he averaged 7.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and two assists per game during his time there.
The jump from D2 to D1 is certainly a big one, no matter which conference, and I would imagine that there are some bigger fish that Rhoades is trying to reel in at guard. That being said, Allard only has one season of eligibility left, so taking a flyer on a kid like him who could potentially be a guy that can give you a few quality minutes off the bench can’t hurt.
Thomas joins Jay Rodgers (Central Connecticut State), Brant Byers (Miami-Ohio), Roberts Blum (Davidson), and Tim Oboh (Buffalo) as other fellow transfers to join the Nittany Lions, as well as a pair of European commits in Roko Prkačin and François Wibaut. PSU has also seen a couple more players depart in the past week as Tibor Mirtić and Saša Ciani both announced they will be entering the transfer portal.
