While Penn State wrestling has grown accustomed to freshmen being molded into superstars veery quickly, there has never been quite as meteoric a rise as for their new commit. For someone who has yet to step foot in Happy Valley, Jayden James has certainly started making a name for himself. It all finally came to a head, where James earned a spot in a best of three matchup to fight for a spot on Team USA at the World Championships in dominating fashion at the USA Team Trials.
James was not initially expected to go far, only being seeded ninth, but still found a way to win against three wrestlers ranked higher, including some of his future teammates. Perhaps his most impressive victory of the night was against future teammate Joe Sealey, who was the top seed, and yet got humiliated by James 10-0. He also beat a two time finalist in the NCAAs in Mikey Caliendo in the quarterfinals, proving his run was no fluke.
Seeing as to how James is ranked as the No. 3 recruit in his class out of Delbarton High School in New Jersey, this was to be expected of James. In a career that has seen him dominate state championships, going without a single loss over two years, to dominating U17 competition in the US Open, only giving up a singular point, proves that James is just another commit in a long line of future Penn State stars in the sport of wrestling.
The sky's the limit for what this kid could be able to do in the future at the collegiate level if he is already dominating elite competition.
