The biggest question facing every WNBA team in training camp
WNBA training camps open with key questions for each team.
Pep Guardiola emphasizes the importance of Rayan Cherki performing in the final third for Manchester City's success. He believes Cherki's technical skills and unpredictability are crucial for upsetting opponents, especially in key matches.
Pep Guardiola wants his most talented player shining in the final third for Manchester City to prosper
Across the past two matches that Manchester City have played against Arsenal and Liverpool, Pep Guardiola has come up with the ideal attacking formula for his team. Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku, and Rayan Cherki have started in City’s Carabao Cup final and FA Cup quarter-final victories. There is a synergy up front in Manchester City’s play with those four players and Nico O’Reilly bursting forward. Rayan Cherki, in particular, has played well in both of Manchester City’s past two matches. Playing just behind Haaland or drifting onto the right with Antoine Semenyo has seen Cherki perform at his devastating best. Looking ahead, Pep Guardiola wants to continue to use Manchester City’s most technically gifted player in the final third.
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s crucial Premier League fixture against Chelsea, Pep Guardiola told the media that despite how well Cherki does in possession deep in his own half, Manchester City need, and want, Cherki doing his best work in the final third. Guardiola explained that Cherki’s ability to upset City’s opponents rhythm, with unpredictability and technical ability, is best used high up the pitch. Guardiola explained: “He (Rayan Cherki) has the ability and quality in the final third. That’s why I sometimes say when they go to the goalkeeper for the ball I say no, I want you there in the final third.”
“They have something that I like a lot with attacking players, how they play with rhythms, accelerate, decelerate, accelerate, decelerate, then immediately attack then stop, then accelerate again.“
“These players have this ability to play with the rhythm of the opponents and the vision to make the extra pass, this is what defines the best.”
Pep Guardiola also compared Rayan Cherki to Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva. That is the ultimate compliment to Cherki given Bernardo’s standing at City. The Manchester City manager explained that Cherki’s ability to be non-fussed by pressure, is similar to Bernardo Silva. Guardiola added: “He’s one of the most unbelievably talented players I’ve ever seen and hopefully he can stay for longer because he has the attributes to be a top player.”
“The attributes he has are difficult to find. He’s the same as Bernardo, in the difficult moments and under pressure, he acts like it’s a friendly game, that it doesn’t matter, and that’s so difficult to find. As a manager and sporting director, it’s one of the biggest attributes I’d like to find in a player that the team signs.”
Rayan Cherki has shown in his debut season at Manchester City that he will be a top attacking weapon for his team. In 42 appearances in all competitions, Cherki has scored 9 goals and added 11 assists. He has also caught the eye with his technical ability, dribbling, and ability to produce the spectacular. More important than all of that, Cherki has shown that City look their most lethal going forward when the French international is operating in and around Manchester City’s opponents’ penalty area.
When Cherki is on the edge of City’s opponent’s penalty area, anything is possible. He has the technical ability and vision to make passes that not many, if any, other players in the Premier League or Europe can produce. Also, Cherki can create space for himself or his teammates quickly with his tremendous dribbling ability. Snippets of this have been on display in Manchester City’s past two wins over Arsenal and Liverpool. It is no coincidence that City look lethal in the final third and infinitely more dangerous when Cherki starts. Cherki adds unpredictability and freedom to Manchester City’s attacking play. It is also noticeable that Cherki’s carefree nature rubs off on his teammates. Due to all of this, it makes Manchester City an even more dangerous proposition for their opponents.
Pep Guardiola wants Rayan Cherki doing his best work in the final third. After watching Manchester City’s past two matches, it is easy to see why. The French international is a major attacking weapon for his team and City do have a different edge to their attacking play with Cherki starting regularly.
Pep Guardiola wants Rayan Cherki to focus on the final third because his technical skills and unpredictability can disrupt opponents' rhythm and enhance Manchester City's attacking play.
Rayan Cherki has played a significant role in Manchester City's recent matches, starting alongside Erling Haaland and others, and has been instrumental in their victories in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Guardiola stated that Cherki has the ability and quality to impact the game in the final third, emphasizing that he prefers Cherki to stay high up the pitch rather than dropping deep.
Manchester City's attacking strategies have evolved to utilize a synergy among players like Haaland, Semenyo, Doku, and Cherki, focusing on maximizing their effectiveness in the final third.
