Petersburg won the Ben Merica Classic championship in Hedgesville, finishing the tournament with a 5-1 record. They defeated Hedgesville 12-4 in the final, with standout performances from Miley Tingler and Gracie Carpenter.
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — No. 4 Petersburg won three games Saturday to capture the Ben Merica Classic championship at Hedgesville.
The Vikings (12-2), who went 5-1 during the tourney, defeated Hedgesville, 12-4, for the title.
Petersburg avenged a loss to Musselman Friday with a 20-13 triumph over the Applemen on Saturday. The Vikings also defeated Hampshire, 19-0, Saturday and edged Hedgesville, 9-8, Friday.
In the championship game, Miley Tingler went 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs to lead the Vikings. Cheyenne Sites, Ella Chew (Potomac State commit) and Lacey Moyers doubled.
Gracie Carpenter pitched a complete game for the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits across six innings.
Hedgesville's Lexie Brown and Maggie Boyer doubled for Hedgesville. Chloe Frankhauser took the loss.
Petersburg racked up 24 hits against Musselman. Abi Nettles homered, and Nettles, Tingler, Chew and Ella Markwell had three hits each. Markwell drove in five runs.
Sissy Cole belted a home run for the Vikings to open the day against Hampshire (0-12). Tingler tripled and had three ribbies.
Both of Petersburg's games Friday went to extra innings.
Tawney was the Vikings' standout in the first contest against Hedgesville going 4 for 5, while Tingler had three hits, including a triple.
Chew and Karlie DiBenedetto each had a pair of hits for Petersburg against Musselman.
Petersburg hosts No. 1 Allegany (8-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Hampshire dropped both of its games Friday.
Charly Ashton, Kylee Potter and Rheagan Barnes each had a hit for Hampshire in its 19-1 loss to Hedgesville.
Kaitlyn Ferguson had two base hits in the Trojans' 13-0 defeat against Martinsburg.
Hampshire hosts a doubleheader against Martinsburg on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Fort Hill 8, Rockwood 5
CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill won its sixth game in seven tries beating Rockwood, Pennsylvania, at the F-Club Classic on Saturday at Washington Middle.
The Sentinels (7-3) scored six runs in the third inning to take control. Haley Metz had three hits and three RBIs, and Summer Welsh and Alina Benson singled twice each.
Welsh pitched into the seventh inning to earn the win, allowing five runs on eight hits in six frames. Metz recorded the final three outs for the save.
Rockwood's Pae Sanner took the loss. She surrendered eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in six frames.
Fort Hill (3-2 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) is at Allegany (8-1, 3-0 WestMAC) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Mtn. Ridge 8, Hancock 0
FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge's six-run third inning gave the Miners (3-6) a cushion, and it led to a shutout of Hancock on Friday.
The Miners recorded six singles and two walks in the third.
Base hits from Madison Bowman, Aubreigh Wilson, Maci Beeman and Anne Baker drove in runs.
Destinee Johnson got the win with five shutout frames, allowing six hits with three strikeouts.
Mountain Ridge hosts No. 2 Keyser (10-3) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
No. 1 Allegany 12, Rockwood 1
CUMBERLAND — Nine Campers hit safely to power No. 1 Allegany to a rout of Rockwood Saturday at the F-Club Classic, pushing the team's winning streak to seven.
Allegany (8-1) scored in all but one inning and plated three in the second, third and seventh frames.
Jordyn Sneathen (St. Francis signee) had thre hits and two ribbies, Alyssa Rader was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Tyiss Jessie doubled, Naima Hall had two RBIs, and Sadee Baker singled twice.
Savannah Walton threw a complete-game gem with 16 strikeouts, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in seven strong innings of work.
Addie Barto drove in Rockwood's lone run. She took the loss in the circle.
Allegany hosts rival Fort Hill on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
East Hardy 11-18, Tygarts Valley 1-15
MILL CREEK, W.Va. — East Hardy racked up 39 hits across a doubleheader sweep of Tygarts Valley on Saturday.
The Cougars (5-4), winners in four of their last five, couldn't have won both without the standout performance of Madison Strosnider in the circle.
Strosnider, signed to Richard Bland College, struck out 18 in a seven-inning gem in Game 1, and she entered in the sixth inning of the second — the score 16-15 East Hardy at the time — and put up two scoreless frames in relief for the save, striking out all six batters.
Jaylynn Combs doubled twice and had four RBIs in the first game, Adyson Crider was 3 for 4 with a double, and Gracie Heishman doubled.
In Game 2, Strosnider was 4 for 4 with two doubles and three ribbies, Crider and Paylynn Rexrode doubled and singled twice each, and Heishman and Bella Bauserman both had three singles.
East Hardy hosts Berkeley Springs on Monday at 5 p.m.
Petersburg defeated Hedgesville, Musselman, and Hampshire to win the Ben Merica Classic.
