Jon Rahm aims to be the first Spaniard to win the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, despite uncertainties surrounding LIV Golf's future. He emphasizes focusing on his game rather than the business aspects of golf.

NEWTOWN SQUARE â Jon Rahm acknowledged Tuesday that he wants to become the first Spaniard to win the PGA Championship.
That might be difficult this week at Aronimink Golf Club considering his uncertain future with LIV Golf, which has announced that it is no longer being funded by Saudi Arabiaâs Public Investment Fund.
âYeah, it is something weâve had to deal with, obviously,â Rahm said, âbut there are just some things that are out of my control. Out of the few talents I have in my life, fixing a business is not one of them. I might be the worst person for that.
âMy job is to play golf. Luckily, Iâm decent at it.â
Donât feel sorry for him.
Rahm has won two majors, the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and the 2023 Masters. Theyâre the main reasons why LIV made him its highest-paid golfer in late 2023, luring him away from the PGA Tour with a contract worth at least $300 million.
Reports suggested that he was paid a massive amount of money up front, which was a good thing for him considering LIVâs shaky financial situation.
Saudi Arabia spent $5 billion on LIV to diversify its economy, increase tourism and, its critics would say, enhance its image through âsportswashingâ to offset criticisms of human rights abuses. And now, because they didnât see a return on their investment, among other reasons, theyâre out.
When Rahm left the PGA Tour for LIV, he expressed the hope that the two groups would merge.
âI was never thinking that I was going to be any sort of weight that would tip the scales to make things come together,â he said. âThat was never an argument in my mind. When asked if that was the case for people to come together, that would be great.â
Rahm wasnât the only prominent player to think it would be best to merge. Two-time Masters and PGA champion Rory McIlroy thought so a few years ago.
âIâm glad I was wrong,â McIlroy said Tuesday. âI can admit when Iâm wrong, and that was one that I did get wrong. I think it was always a possibility.
âLook, with everything thatâs happening in the Middle East (the war in Iran), that had a lot to do with it. Whenever you have funding tied so much to the geopolitical landscape in the world, thatâs a tricky road to navigate.â
There were times when McIlroy carried the weight of the PGA Tour on his shoulders in its fight against LIV. It affected his game. But when the PGA Tour set an expensive path for LIV golfers to return earlier this year, McIlroy was âvery happyâ that Brooks Koepka accepted those terms.
Koepka paid $5 million and forfeited five years of participation in the Player Equity Program, which PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp estimated would be a $50 million loss.
Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Cam Smith and others decided not to do the same. Now their professional futures are up in the air. With LIV, theyâre drawing very few in-person fans and very small television ratings.
Jon Rahm believes he has a chance to win but acknowledges the challenges he faces, particularly with LIV Golf's uncertain future.

Theyâre here this week because they qualified for spots through their performances in the majors. Rahm and DeChambeau are among the betting favorites to win.
McIlroy would like to see Rahm and Tyrell Hatton, who have been European Ryder Cup teammates, return to the PGA Tour. But he doesnât feel sorry for them nor should he.
âLook, I have friends over there,â he said. âIt just feels like the rug was pulled under their feet and everyone was sort of blindsided by it. But again, thatâs the risk that those guys chose to take. Thereâs a lot of uncertainty in the air now.â
For Rahm and everyone else at LIV. He has no regrets, though. Three hundred million dollars can be very comforting. Heâs financially secure for the rest of his life, but he admitted that LIVâs future is cloudy.
âItâs the people in charge of LIV, whose job I do not envy for a second,â he said, ânot now, not when things are going good because itâs not something I think I can do. Itâs their job to fix it.
âI have faith in the work that theyâre doing. I have faith that theyâre going to come up with a good plan. Until that plan is explained to us, not that there isnât anything to worry about, I donât think I need to add any attention to it.â
