The Philadelphia Phillies starting rotation has been shaky to begin the season. The Phillies starters have the fourth-worst ERA (27th, 4.68 ERA) and 24th in walks (21). Despite having a bad rotation to open the year, the Phillies have one budding arm who can stabilize the rotation this season or in the future.
Philadelphia Phillies prospect Gage Wood gets promoted to the top 100 prospects list
One prospect who could be a future member of the Phillies starting rotation down the road is right-hander Gage Wood. Drafted 26th overall in the first round last season, Wood was officially added to MLB's top 100 prospects. According to MLB Pipeline on X, Wood is now the 100th-best prospect in baseball after the graduation of Chicago Cubs catcher/first baseman/designated hitter Moises Ballesteros. Wood is the Phillies' fourth-best prospect and will soon be third on the list once right-hander Andrew Painter graduates.
The 22-year-old was a top pitching prospect coming out of the University of Arkansas, and pitched a no-hitter and had 19 strikeouts in the College World Series. In two starts with the Phillies Single-A affiliate, the Clearwater Threshers, Wood has an 0-1 with a 1.23 ERA and has walked two and struck out 15 in 7.1 innings.
Even though he's in Single-A, Wood has a chance to be a member of the Phillies big league team this season if he continues to perform. There's precedent for this, as Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yasavage did so last season. Yesavage jumped from Single-A to MLB with 25 games (22 starts) under his belt.
