The Philadelphia Phillies needed a change.
For a team with World Series aspirations, they've already dug themselves into a deep hole. Amid a 9-19 start, the Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday.
Don Mattingly will serve as the interim manager for the time being. Philadelphia reportedly offered the job to the recently available Alex Cora, but he turned down the position.
The Phillies could re-engage contact with Cora during the offseason, or they could consider a former Baltimore Orioles manager who led the club to 101 wins in 2023.
"Maybe [Brandon] Hyde wasn't the problem in Baltimore after all? Things haven't gone much better under Craig Albernaz so far, and he did guide them to two straight postseason berths," FanSided's Chris Landers wrote Tuesday.
Currently, Hyde is a senior advisor to the baseball operations department for the Tampa Bay Rays.

"Granted, both of those ended in early exits, but it's not his fault that his team forgot how to pitch in 2023 ALDS and then forgot how to hit in the 2024 Wild Card series," Landers added. "He's got a lot of experience, and he's managed through both rebuilds and windows of contention."
The Phillies should at least consider Hyde for the managerial role. He is not as well-known as Mattingly or Cora, but was a driving force in the Orioles' transformation from bottom dwellers to contenders in the American League.
