The Philadelphia Phillies came into the 2026 MLB season without making too many changes to the roster overall.
But one of the biggest changes was the release of Nick Castellanos despite being owed $20 million for the season. Instead of keeping him on the roster, the Phillies are paying him roughly $19 million to not be on the roster.
He signed with the San Diego Padres this offseason, and as ESPN's David Schoenfield highlighted, he's been one of the biggest disappointments in MLB this season, proving Dave Dobmrowski right for releasing the veteran outfielder.
"Did I think either of these signings would work out? No. Did I think they'd be this bad? No," Schoenfield writes on Castellanos and Marcell Ozuna. "Both teams will be in search of a DH to fill the void."
The Phillies cut Castellanos, paying him money to be off their team this season. And that's actually turned out to be the correct decision by a wide margin.
So far this season for the Padres, Castellanos has -0.9 bWAR on the season through just 18 games and 56 plate appearances. He has a brutal .404 OPS and .151 batting average and 13 OPS+.

Dombrowski's decision to cut Castellanos was the right one, even more so than simply not getting enough production out of Castellanos offensively.
This season, Castellanos has been even more of a disappointment than his final year in Philadelphia, where he had an 89 OPS+ and .694 OPS.
Dombrowski and the Phillies were proven right in a big way with their release of Castellanos. This decision aged very well for the Phillies, as he's been a net negative for the Padres.
